I ran my Katmia P3 450 to death last night. I had Unreal Tournament @ 1600x1200 with a few other programs running and left it running all night at 518mhz. I checked the Average temp readings and the were at 51C and the max was at 56C. I cut all the programs and killed UT and let it idle for about an hour and the average was around 55C and pretty much stable. This confused me because the fan I have is a constant rate fan 4" case fan. Is there a reason why this would happen?

Stats:
Motherboard Monitor 4
Soyo 6ba+ IV with the Katmia P3 450@518mhz
Voodoo 3 3000agp 166@183mhz

Could that be a problem with my temp sensors? The SoYo hardware monitor read 34C on the system temp and that was constant. No change that was really noticable it hit 35C everyonce in a while but nothing else.

Any advice/help would be appreciated. Thanks ahead of time. 8)

Katmai's run really hot overall. What kind of cooling do you have on the processor itself?

If you have poor cooling or only a big heatsink and that 4" case fan only providing case ventilation then, yeh, it's gonna get pretty hot.

Well I have a medium anndtek? with a "Self made" 4" casefan holder off the Slot 1 bracket. It keeps the heatsink pretty cool and its barely warm after 3 hours of full load of UT at 1600x1200 I would say the heatsink gets around 90 to 100 F Not near50C Nowhere near I can pretty much say that.

Well, I have a P2 350 in a Compaq that acts as basically only a SETI machine and it has only a big heatsink/no fan and you can't even touch the thing.

It's two years old and still plugs away no problem so I'd say those ol' Katmai's were just built for heat. You're probably ok.
