remember.... it's $350 system, so no more money left to buy heatsink. I just mod the intel fan to run 3800 rpm all the time.
I'm surprise this chip is okay too with 175 FSB !!!! with default voltage !!!!! IT'S 75% OC WITH DEFAULT VOLTAGE !!!

F**KIN H3LL mate! Thats a sweet price and a sweet oc.
not sure why everyone is so surprised. sure its a good overclock but the D1 core typically maxes out at 3.5-3.6 which is right where he is.

Well I think it has more to do with the fact the hes cooling via stock and some other things.

i had a 2.4b that did 3.5 stable on my 1.6a's stock cooler..
i wonder if that chip could go higher with a better heatsink...

based on my experience with my 2.4b it will but not much.
my 2.4b was stable on stock air at 3.5. put on a slk900 and 92mm fan and it was stable to 3.6. put on watercooling and it was stable up to 3.66.
i think he is approaching the limit of the core.

Here, I'll try:
NF7-S $100
512MB Corsair PC3200 $75
1700+ $60
Not bad for $235. Give me another stick of ram and I'm pretty sure I'll match your memory scores, and still be under $346.

Even though that board overvolts a little still I still consider that a good oc for a 2.0A CPU and I don't care what stepping it is.

Ouch, that will be some work, considering you're still at default and I'm .2v up. your mflops is a two part score, though.

What are you using to test stablility?

01-09-04, 02:05 PM
I've clocked a 2.0A chip before and they're pretty amazing. I dont think I've actually hit the limit of the chip. But cuz i used PC2700 in that rig and the Asus P4PE-X mobo only gave me 2 mem divider options, 1:1 and 3:4, i chose to go with 3:4 and stay at 2.5GHz (ram at stock 166MHz) cuz it's for my sis which would be a third of the way around the world in a month. Should have tried 1:1 @ 166fsb... That would have given me 3.32GHz which i thought might be impossible with this chip... Even my 2.4C seems to max out at 3.36GHz (havent tried clocking again with my new SP-94 and flashing the bios)

OK how about this
1 ASUS 266-d, dual AMD board $105 on ebay. Pair of 1700xp Chips locked in @ 2.26ghz each. $45 each when i got them new dltc's 1.5v, "should of bought 50 of them!!!, 1 512 stick of mushkin 2100 $59 from the bargin bin on newegg.
$254. Enough said. And almost $100 less!!! guess i could add another stick of ram for a gig and still be under no problem.
2 SVC g69 $6 heatsinks, this is my F@H speed 24/7 stable no errors, they are good up 2 2350mhz each for benching!! Dont feel like restarting and upping the volts. And it's in my basement, Remote desktop.
But im sure this benchie is enough to be king of the budget!!!http://mywebpages.comcast.net/tedinde/photogallery/XFpics/dually226.JPG

quite true. your system is on par with my dually 1700+ i built for about 375 dollars total with a nice case and 530W fortron. :)
got a large number of good deals building that.
Tedinde
01-09-04, 10:27 PM
Hah someone with a new 530 fortron, been looking for this answer, I use fortrons for everything now, Tired of generics and their 350watters are sweet, around $30 and all 3 adjustable pots.
question is, the 530 is brand new, found one review but no mention of the pots inside.
Have you cracked yours open for any adjustments?? I need that 3.5v+ on my 3.3v line. My TTGI and Antec cant hold up over 4ghz on the 3.3v line for some reason, and around 4.2ghz, my 3.3v drops below 3. No adjustment:(
They in there or what??
i haven't opened it up and i will admit i'm no psu guru.
i've got it sitting on the table here.. what am i to look for? just some knobs? will it be pretty obvious?
Tedinde
01-09-04, 10:46 PM
Dont open your supply if you dont have to for me. Inside there are 3 adjustable pots, only like a small screwdriver will fit them. Usually Blue with a small white platic Know on top, or Metal with a black adjustment on top. or could be any color
Looks like what the red arrow is pointing too, small, if it has 3 of these inside all 3 voltages are adjustable.
But again, do not open your supply and void your warranty to just answer this question for me. Im ordering one anyway.
how's this?
http://www.maxvla.com/host/fortron1.jpg
http://www.maxvla.com/host/fortron2.jpg
there are 5 pots to adjust. i assume 2 are for the 2 fans and the other 3 are power related.
Warranty?? whats that? :D
Tedinde
01-09-04, 10:52 PM
Yes the top circuit board is for the fans i have them on my other fortrons, the the other 3 are for 5v 3.3v and 12v.
Fortron has some killer HS in there on all their supplies. Amd antec true 550 cant handle it or a ttgi isnt handleing me either!!!
Mind if i borrow your pics for xtremesystems Maxvla for the forums. We've been wondering?

Just some input for Maxvla, Tedinde and the rest: When you OC PSU rails, you should consider these aspects:
1. Components on your mobo, CPU, Chipset, MosFet, Hardisk, CD-ROM will get hotter due to increase voltage, so keep it sane. Additional 5% for 12V and 5V are considered MAX. (12.6V and 5.25V). Remember that current design of P4 mobo takes CPU power from 12V. So, in other words, when you set 1.700V VCORE in Bios, there is possibility the mobo gives more voltage than 1.700V. It could be as high as +0.2V !!! especially when your mobo overvolts like Asus.
2. 3.3V rails can be increase to 3.6V ( 9% ) and definetely boost DDR performance. This is WOW effect !!!
3. In some unexpected situation, you will wandering around why losing stability after doing the mod. This problem is cause by heat on MosFet and any other chips. Relax.... just add small heatsink and epoxy it. You could add fans blowing to these hot components.
4. From OC point of view? yess.... you get the highest possible MHz for every components in a PC: CPU, Chipset, GPU, Memory.
Okay then, anyone else got el-cheapo system to beat?? Congrats to AMD guy ..... you beat me with double AMD brains ..... damn.....  :D :D
Tedinde
01-10-04, 12:05 PM
You did see my single AMD cpu also didnt you over 9k in sisoft for in the $120's right.
Just pushing you harder, there's some more left in your chip!!!:D
Tedinde
01-10-04, 12:11 PM
2. 3.3V rails can be increase to 3.6V ( 9% ) and definetely boost DDR performance. This is WOW effect !!!
Yes i've heard you can get good ddr numbers. with some more volts.http://mywebpages.comcast.net/tedinde/photogallery/XFpics/295fsb%20hyperx222.JPG
And my Sig board doesnt change much with overvolting the 12v to the cpu. And pushing over 4ghz my 3.3v drops bad.
Most of us mod the board for stability, not the PS anyway. Only reason we are interested in the pots on the PS, is if they are low to beging with, and then adding some more volts to the 3.3.
My BH-5 memory for benching i run the memory @ 3.55v. My board is Volt modded.
This is OC forums, and the other place is Xtremesystems we are posting in. Everyone's volt modded here and there!!!
Your warnings and input on upping the volts is a good idea to the less informed before they just start turning the volts up.

TY, i've always had good luck with stock intel, they do a good job for getting them for free with the cpu. Never ran them faster though. How much does it help.
Nah im no mod here. But im just about everywhere!!! And the cheapest guy around!!!, That why i love your competion!!! I can squeeze a penny with the best of them!!!:D
I cant sqeeze more out of the amd single without strapping on a at least $40 worth of cooling on it.

You should live in Wisconsin! If we ever have two days that are alike... I can't complain though, hell must have froze over. We don't get nearly as cold as we use to.
BTW last year in December we had temps go from about 50 to 0 in like 2 days.

good job on that 2.0A, i have a C1 stepping and i can post at 3.55, but fully prime95 stable at 3.44.
currently testing my 2.4c m0 chip... not very impressive so far..hehe (compare to my 2.0a)
Back to the original topic of what can be built for $350... these are new components that are currently available to anyone... not trying to take anything away from the thread starter because he got a great O/C... just saying for that price there are lots of options...
2.4C SL6Z3 M0 stepping for $164 at zipzoomfly.
Abit IS7-E for $80 at newegg.
Kingston HyperX PC3000 RAM 2X256 MB dual channel kit for $108 at newegg.
Ok... so total is $352... I'm $2 over budget. I personally have the same exact components except instead of the IS7-E mobo I have the IC7 (see signature). I'm Prime stable at 3.56 gig and can run pretty good at 3.6 gig. I've even got a max blast of 3.7 gig (not stable, but fun to get a screenshot anyway).

Yes so are all of us F@H junkies, we dont know why we do it. Some for the race, Some cause friends and loved one's died from cancer or whatever reason we just feel it's a good cause.
My F@H rigs i do use for customers computers, I call it stress testing before they get them. I usually build a lot of AMD, buy the chips OEM. I do a lot of upgrades, Most of my SDRAM boards turn in to f@H rigs, I have a lot of ram around for upgrades, and no sense letting CPU's sit there and do nothing in a tray.
I admit it costs me a lot of electric. When i need CPU's i'll hit the farm.
Man i still cant explain why i do it now that im really thinking about it.???
I'll be breaking 200k in ponts and close to 10k WU's done.
I think i just like the competition mostly, Kinda why i jumped on this tread.
I can outdo the 9.2k he posted for half. But I decided to let someone else have some glory. Im not greedy. And im not going to go overboard on this. the rigs were next to me i used for this competition and im used to doing stuff cheap.
I believe asw7576 3.6 OC even though I dont want too, really hard to believe on a stock HS?? He should really post a screenie. Why he doesnt i dont know??
But who cares anymore, I posted the duallie, and it killed this competion like i said.

Heh...should've read this thread first. Must be not too uncommon for these "lower-end" P4s to o/c so well.

No quiet up to 3.4, but less money for 3.1G. It might go a little higher but this motherboard gets errors like crazy with PC3200.
Refurb. Albatron 845PE Pro II Silver ED. $39
Refurb 2.0G P4 D1 stepping(copperbased $89
Intel heatsink, 155fsb, 1.575V)
512 MB Crucial PC 2700(had A long time) $70
running around 380, default settings
Total $198
Yeah luck had a big part in this deal.

I got mine from the newegg.com refurbished section. I don't know of any pattern to getting these P4 2G D1 steppings. I think it is just luck when you get one. The best gamble would be newegg.com or any other large seller who handle a large volume of processors. I originally bought the motherboard and processor to build a folding rig. I expected to get an overclock around 2.5G. Sometimes you get lucky and everything falls into place, even the old crucial PC2700 overclocked great for me. I don't know why but this computer really seems faster than you would expect with very good 3dmarks.

what I found is that red = 3.3v and the fushia colored (not red) is BOTH the 12v and 5v rail. srry if this has already been told.

Crazy overclocking. Can I ask a question please, I do see that D1 are good overclockers, but there are different steppings, theres is C1, M0, D0 are these also good overclockers. Also where can I find a cheap D1 to overclock.
Thanks

@ threadstarter
Looks like another hell of an 2.0A overclock. Mine would boot windows at 3.8Ghz (190FSB), could you try that? I had to pinmod it to 1.9v though. It was prime stabile at 3.6Ghz, 1.8v
