View Full Version : Bios checksum error
I just started getting this every now and then at boot up. It says:
Award bios boot block
Bios checksum error
checking media in floppy drive a.
what does this error mean?

I believe that checksums are used as an easy way to ascertain if a program is working right, or was installed right. Program "a" should have "x" amount of bytes. If the byte count is right, the program is working, or was installed correctly. I may be wrong about this, btw. Checksums may be a different thing entirely!
I suggest going to Asus's Web site. Sometimes it's easier to get on their http://www.asus.com.tw site if their US site is jammed. Read everything they have to say about the Bios Rev. you are using. This requires some digging. For instance, I finally did this after flashing my Bios twice, then reflashing it back to the older saved Rev., because I got a checksum error at the end of the flash process. It turned out that the checksum error was "supposed" to be there. It was a harmless bug.
Your problem seems to be different. You may want to flash to an older, saved Bios. Or, DL the new one and reflash.
I got lucky!
I tried reflashing my bios to see if it would get rid of that error. The error would only come when I would restart my pc. Not on a cold boot.
Well when I reflashed my bios, my pc froze in the begining of the write process! OH ****! I thought. I restarted the pc, and just as I thought no boot. Got a Boot block bios rom checksum error. I had no bios! It got erased! It kept checking the a:/ drive for a bootable disk. So I figured if I got the awdflash and the bios update on a disk all would be well. Fat chance!
I tried reflashing the bios and kept getting an error "unkown flash type". WTF! I tried about 15 different bios updates and some would flash but I would get write fails and some would get the error above. Then I tried the very first bios version from the original release of the board. Well it flashed it and gave me some write fails. restarted the pc and now I lost my video as well!
Well I'm thinking my bios chip is junk. Well after around 3 hours of downloading bios updates from another computer, putting them on floppy's and trying to reflash my bios I finaly found one that worked. What a pain in the ass. I had to put a autoexec.bat on the floppy now cause I had no video so it would auto flash it. All of a sudden I saw the pc reboot and heard that all so wonderfull single beep to let you know everything is ok. WHOO HOO! Well I'm just glad I didnt have to buy a new board or try and get abit to send me a new bios chip.
I cant believe that happened though! I have updated bios's many times and never had one fail.
P.S the error is gone now when I restart my pc hehe!
What did you have to include in the autoexec.bat?
all you have to do is type
A:\awdflash name of bios update
Like for example this is exactly what I typed for mine.
A:\awdfash beh_po.bin
Then when your pc boots off of your floppy it will run the flash utility automatically instead of having to type it in manually.
(btw, i realise this is an old post) A checksum error almost always means mobo battery problems. If you replace the battery and it still gives you that error, then you can blame the mobo. Just try a new battery and see what happens. The first time you boot with the new battery you will see that, but the next time you shouldn't.
