My computer gets to the windows xp login screen. I can move the mouse for a few seconds and then it will freeze. While I can still move the mouse, moving it over a login name does nothing when normally it will make it light up. More details below.

I decided to tweak my computer today, it's been a while since I've done much. I installed new video card drivers, and slowly started overclocking my Ti4200. I got up to 300/550 and decided to keep it there. So I decided to give my 1700+ a shot at overclocking. I had bought the 1700+ that came unlocked and were supposed to be able to reach atleast 2 GHz on air cooling. I oc'ed the cpu a little, to around 2.0 GHz. 160x12.5 I remember reaching this speed before so I didn't see why I couldn't again. But I couldn't. So I set it turned it down to 140x12.5, this time the PC booted up to the windows login screen and froze. So I put the cpu back to 133x12.5 and tried again. I was again able to move the mouse around a little but whenever I moved the mouse over a login name, nothing would happen when normally the name lighted up. Soon I heard a short beep and I watched the computer freeze. I tried setting the computer down to 100x12.5, but that didn't help either. I uped the voltage a bit, from 1.5 to 1.6 to 1.7 but I still couldn't login to windows. I tried starting up in Safe Mode but I couldn't do anything. I'm thinking it probably has something to do with the video card overclock, but I don't recall telling the video card to overclock the video card whenever it starts. What should I do??? Help!!

Try booting in safe mode and removing the program you use to overclock the card (or prevent it from loading at startup). See if it helps. Or, boot in safe mode and uninstall the Card drivers then reinstall after a proper boot.

I used the nvidia's built in overclocking software. I can't do anything in safe mode. All i see is a black background that says safe mode. No start menu, icons, nothing. I hate my computer and it hates me.

Its a conspiracy:)

Do you have another video card you could toss in to be able to get in and tweak your system?

I tried last known configuration. The computer said it restored the registry. But then I tried to login and it froze once again. I restarted the computer and tried booting up normally. I get the following message:

STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (file):
\SystemBoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE
or its log or alternate
It is corrupt, absent, or not writable

yeah...s*** what should I do? I'm thinkin that I have to reinstall windows or try to repair it or something...now where's that WinXP CD...

Sounds like a corrupt file. I dont think your Vid card is bad as you can get as far as the logon screen with it. Try a repair with your CD.

Use the windows XP cd to boot and then choose the repair on the CD.
