Tell me your worst experiences :)
Does overheating cause systems to freeze before the cpu is permanently damaged? Or has somebody actually fried a cpu that way? If so: Was it the first lockup, or had you been ignoring numerous lockups?
IŽd like a lot of input on this (naturally)

From what I've seen is that It depends on how hot the cpu gets. You really have to fry the cpu to kill it, and it also depends on AMD or Intel the new ones run hot as is, so in time the heat will take its toll. Best to install the biggest heat sink that will fit your board with a good fan. Your only talking a Few dollars for the safety that comes from the overcooling. Best to be cold than hot, even if running stock. By the way I have never fried a cpu yet ( knock on wood ). I do know people who have. Most were getting error messages, cut off's Etc. But a few said there was not any warning ???? That what they claim. One, his fan quit, on a Tbird, that fried in about 30 sec. Bummer
If you get a freeze, I suggest that you shut down ASAP. When in the frozen mode there is a good chance that the CPU will get hotter until the system is turned off. Many of us use software to cool the CPU. If Windows is frozen the software can't work and the CPU will tend to overheat for as long as the machine is on.
The cooler you run your cpu the more stability you will most likely get out of it. When your running warm you will get lockups, explorer errors, BSOD's. All in all a very unstable system. While gaming it may kick you back out to your desktop.
On my board (Abit BE6-II) I have an alarm I can enable. And that alarm has saved my ass a few times. Like the time my 4 wire psu cable went bad which my peltier was hooked up to. The pelt. stopped working and the cpu got hotter, and hotter. Well the alarm went off as it booted up and sure as **** the cpu temp was at about 65c! So I shut it down real quick. and checked it out.

The only time I fried a chip was an AMD K6-2 333, Iwas upgrading my k6 233 laptop (ctx ezbook 700e), and didn't pay enough attention to the switches...I set it. and it never booted again..so I put the 233 back in, and overclocked it to 300 either way, I was getting the same numbers with both chips...go figure eh? I am glad it was a $50.00 AMD instead of a $200.00+ intel cpu.
