Well my question is that is it safe not to use the default Northbridge cooler? It has started to make so really annoying noises. If not then what would be good to replace it with?

IF the noise is an issue checkn out the Zalman passive heatsinks.

Zalman passive is a good option. Also, an old Pentium 1 or later CPU cooler would do the job nicely as well.

I istalled a Vantec Iceberq kit - came with a southbridge passive as well - bought it at Frys.
