Well the thing is am doing a health and safety report for my college project and I need to include Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – that I could use say when am working inside the computer and to be honest I couldn’t think of anything and i was wondering if anyone could think of any?

Thanks for any help :-)

A grounding strap, which prevents you from getting electrocuted by the components or case.

Well, insulated tools, I guess? Some paranoid people will wear eye protection because when they jam a screwdriver in, it can send things flying.

I can speak from experience here. The NAVY has to have the most ANAL electrical safety requirements of any orginization on earth. It doesn'tmatter if it's 3V or 300, they don't discriminate.

Enough rubber mats around the work area to make the place into a rubber room.
The entire area around whatever it is you're working on has to cordoned off at least five feet out with rope, and have signs on the rope every five feet that say "KEEP OUT".
All extraneous clothing must be removed. I.E. watches, jewelry, belts, ect. You're basicly standing there in pants and a T-shirt.
A big thick rubber glove has to be worn on the non-tool hand. And before you can use said glove, you have to put baby powder in it to check for holes = ungodly mess.
safety goggles. Not glasses, GOOGLES.
You have a rope tied around you with somebody on the other end to yank your butt outta there.
Big thick full chest/abdomen/legs rubber apron.
If you wear glasses, you have to have them tied to your head.
A person , in direct communication, at every potential power source breaker.
All tools have to be double wrapped half lapped with electrical tape, except for the very tips of srewdrivers (this really sucks with pliers).
A completed "electrical safety checklist" signed by a person that is invariably hard to find.
enough spotlights to light up a stadium.
And last but not least... A supervisor watching your every move.

I've seen 10 people dirrectly involved with changing a fuse.

Maybe thick gloves cause also be used to protect you from fast fans so you dont severe a finger.

Actually that would create an easier path to ground. Thereby increasing your risk of shock. ;)

ESD wrist straps have a 1 meg ohm resistor inline to prevent you from getting shocked while using one.

This was a giant fiasco I was involved in. We had staps from two different manufacturers lying around the shop. One brand had the resistor in the bracelet part the other brand had the resistor in the cable part. Start mix-n-match and you wind up with straps that have resistance values of 2 meg ohm, 1 meg ohm, and a couple with 0. see the problem.

Huh, I don't think I've ever seen a strap with a resistor... :eh?:

The ones we had did...

Keep in mind they weren't of the Radio Shack pedigree. These were a spiedel watch band with a beefy cable. About $75 a pop.

That would explain it. The ones I have seen were real cheap looking and had like an 18 guage cable.

Not to ask too much or anything but anyone got any ideas on the other bits to be included…

• Tidiness/hygiene
• Moving about in the work place
• Lifting and carrying
• Electricity
• Machinery
• Hazardous substances
• Fire
• Display screen equipment (dse)
• first aid

What it is I have to write a report about health and safety in an it workplace I have covered most of these points including (ppe) thanks to you guys but I was seeing if there was anything else I had missed out and was something you hadn’t missed.

Like I said before thanks 4 any help :-)
