I just bought a Western Digital 160 gig hd. I seems create but then after like the third reboot i noticed after i sign on to windows, i heard clicking then i tired to move my mouse and my computer was frozen. I think that my new WD was shuting off and on i guess. I looked and i only had 2 things connected to the rail comeing from the PSU.

After that i changed teh IDE cables(thinking that was the problem)
then it worked fine so i thoguth that was the problem. Then like 8 hrs later i got the same problem. ITS A NEW DRIVE!!! Its already giveing me problems and i ahve only had it for less then 1 day.

Anyone ever hear about this time of problem or have this happen to them? If u have then how you fix it?

WD has some GREAT software utils in their web site. Download them and run them - let us know what their software says.

If it is clicking that is very bad. I would make sure the Power cable is connected properly and the Ide cables are hooked up properly. If these are,, then that drive is dieing.I just RMA'ed a western that clicked like heck..But even though it clicked if i reboot several times I was able to warm the drive up and it would work perfectly untill I shut down for more then 3 minutes or so..I am betting if you reboot several times from the case switch that drive when it gets warm will run fine if it does RMA it...

I had one that clicked... it had overheated (my fault) and literly burned me when I took it out.

I would RMA it (unless it gets fixed), they have a pretty good RMA policy.

How long do i have? till my hd dies? Just cuz it clicks is that for sure that it is going to die? I have the software that WD provides for its HD's. It came on a disk.

I just got off the phone with tech support and i was telling them what was going on they told me to return it. As soon as i mentioned "Clicking Noise" they said return it. They didnt even ask me to tell them my settings or any tests to perform.

I Guess they have been haveing alot of problems with these HDs.
Good thing i didnt mail in the $70 rebate:D

I doubt it's a lot of problems more like, if there is clicking somthing IS BORKEN, there are no settings that would cause it to click. I bet any HDD manufaturer's support would do the same thing.

My guess is the motor is dead or the little read arm thing is scrating the platter.

IMO you should've mailed in the MIR anyways, then you get your $70, and you get a new harddrive :)

oh wait, ethics.... always ruins my fun

The tech support was right to stop after the clicking response from you. Hard drives should NEVER click! If it does its on its way to harddrive heaven. Clicking means friction/touching and that is the worst thing that can happen.

Hey my drive clidked for 6 months at start up lol..But like I said it would stop after about 5 or 10 resets....RMA it ...Get the rebate as well obviously you are getting a replacement drive and are entitled to the rebate................................

Yea but if i get the rebate i dont think that Microcenter (http://www.microcenter.com) will let me return it. Since i have to cut out the UPC and the UPC has the S/N right underneath it. Since they will be getting me a new HD i figure i will return everything and they will give me a new HD in its original packageing.

But it would be sweet if i could get 2 MIR. Thats like giveing me the drive for free.:D .....ethics

No get the rebate and return the HDD to western digital, in my experince their RMA system is pretty quick as far as RMA systems go.
