Hello all,

Im tryin to reformat this 1.5 Ghz gateway comp from 98 to XP, but when it gets passed the cd key part of the installation and tries to install shell32.dll or any of the other files it says it cant get it or cant pull it off disk or soemthing.

I already have a second XP disk being mailed to me from a friend in case the one i am using is scratched.

I just wanted to see if it was possibly the brand of computer that is keeping me from reformatting it without soem specific manufacturers CD.

Another friend of mine was telling me it coudl be a hidden partition, in which case i would like to know how i can erase it since ive already gone through the part fo the instalation process where you delete the old partition and create a new one.....Also the old partition was FAT32 and the new one is now NTFS if that helps any.

Thanks for the help yall.

Yep, sounds like a CD error. You could try another CDrom if you have one lying around, or rigourously cleaning the disc. I'd call MS and get a replacement disc.

The only thing I've seen in gateway systems was an older PII Gateway system that had something coded in the BIOS in that it would only recognize the OS it shipped with. But that wouldn't show itself until you rebooted, and I don't think you'll have a simliar problem.

wait for the cd to come, and get back to us if you're still having problems... it seems to be the most likely cause at the moment

i had an old xp cd that would give me random read errors that were all caused by the cd being scratched....the new cd should install without any problems
