View Full Version : Burning Up?
Need to know whether or not I'm burning something up here .
Just got a new mobo and a 933 PIII--trying to overclock--managed to get it up to 1.02 ghz. Ran 3DMark 2000 several times and it's running it OK (no hangs or crashes...yet.)
Here's the specs:
Mobo: Soyo SY-7VCA2
RAM: 384mb PC-133
Processor: 933 PIII FC-PGA, P6C Coppermine P3 E(B), 500-1.13ghz 1.6-1.7, Stepping max C0
Normal settings: 933mhz
CPU/PCI Freq: 133/33
CPU Ratio: 7
Auto Detect DIMM/PCI Clock=Enabled
Core Voltage Adjust: Normal
Current Setting: 1.02ghz
CPU/PCI Freq: 145/36mhz
CPU Ratio: 7
Auto Detect CPU/PCI clock: DISABLED
Core Voltage Adjust: +1.5
Vid card: Hercules Prophet 2 MX--oc'ed to 190/190
Is this burning up? SiSoft Sandra is reporting the CPU temp at 94 F. Not all that hot (Golden Orb cooler). But what is this doing to my vid card/RAM? Just a bit worried. TIA!

Donīt worry man! Just keep on rising the Bus until somone in your case screams he he.. If your memory is a good pc133 one, just set to cas3 in the bios, set the hd to no udma and pio mode 3 or 2... And try more fsb.. If it can run oK, then reset, go to the bios and up the cas to 2... If it can run at cas2 is good.. otherwise, keep cas3... Set the HD back to full udma speed Pio4.. etc.. If it can handle: good... you may set the ram under133 to 100 to test the higher fsb to and avoid misleading you into problems being cpu or memory.... If itīs the cpu, up the voltage... If you already done that, impreoove the cooling )better cooler or add artic silver, or replace the fan with a 28-33 cfm al least...
You may only get some hz becouse your processor already starter from 133mhz and you probably will not reach more than 150 unless youre lucky.... But the high fsb will shurelly make your cpu eat the bytes far better than any celeron will ever eat he he! It will be a litle devil.. After your overclock is close to the limit, donīt forget to play arround with H-odas, wpCredit and Wpcrset to get the maximum performance from your memory, since youīre using via chipset, you must optimize it to get closer to a BX level (withouth the agp problems of course). Your videocard will probably hold things Ok.... Any question just type us here.. Good luck

I dont think you're stressing much anything. Your CPU temp is not bad. I dont think you're burning anything. Enjoy yur system!
Your OK just go slow, You might want to try a Alpha cooler with a decent fan cfm 27 cfm area. I just dumped my AMD & Via board, back to friendly Intel. I have a Plll 933 and Abit SA6R coming today. I hope the 815E set will be ok. I am only worring about the hard drives some one mentioned that on the Raid setup you can kill the HD's when you mess with the FSB ???. Got 2 30 Gig IBM's. Ah what the hell life's a gamble right. By the way I'm aiming for 1050 to 1100 ?
Thanks for the replies! One question though..."you may set the ram under133 to 100 to test the higher fsb to and avoid misleading you into problems being cpu or memory.... "--not sure what you mean by this. Procedure?
I guess what I'm concerned about is that if the Auto Detect DIMM/PCI clock on DISABLED, am I gonna burn up my RAM?

Bistro,
what's your rated RAM timing on your PC133 memory modules? If you can find that, that would help.. if you dont know yet, then set the RAM timing to all 3 3 3 and overclock slowly a mhz by a mhz from 145fsb. It is safer for the RAM to start at that timing. not to worry too much about burning your RAM.
Thanks for all your replies--got it up to 1.03--think I'll quit while ahead--got the RAM at CAS 3---the Herc is oc'ed at 190/190---finding it difficult to break 5000 though on the 3DMark--even with the recommended tweaks---will keep working on it.
Again, Thanks!

1.03 is nice what temp and voltage?
I ran a PIII700 for the longest time at 1.9V and 44C

I've been running this machine with an SA6R and 2 20GB Deskstar's since October and have had no problems. That's with the PCI Bus freq over 40MHz at the highest overclock speed.
Enjoy the SA6R...it's a very nice board. :)

Well, that is a bios seting, where you may choose to run your ram at the same bus speed of the processor or at bus + pci clock... that alows you to run the ram even at bus - pci clock if desired.. alowing you to set a high bus without being afraid your ram will not be ok there.... Donīt forget to use the H-odas softwares to optimize it... You may get some fps more in some games, some 3dmarks higher scores... etc... Real life gain there.. donīt miss it!
