I have three nice OC'ing MB's and three CPU's, one 2500 Barton and two 2100's all OC'd 2.0GHz. Epox 8RGA+, 8RDA and Soltek 75MRN-L. I've had them all close to 2.25 but they become unstable and locks up at random and I'm certain the problem is my two old PC2100 Crucial 256MB RAM sticks. Please stay with me here because I need to give you some background and I'll get to my question shortly.
The two RAM sticks are all I have and when I switch computers I swap-out the RAM one to the other with no apparent problems. Back before I began building my own I had a P4 system and was computer ignorant and figured any SDDDRAM module would work so I ordered another 256 stick from Crucial, plugged it in the P4 system and it went to work fine. When I built my first one using the Soltek MB & 2100 I stuck the two P4 modules in and they worked, ditto the next two using Epox MB's. Eight months ago I wondered what OC'ing was all about and did my homework and here we are an avid OC'er. Now that I have a handle on things, it's amazing the RAM for the P4 & Intel MB worked with my home builts. So, I have FOUR different MB's that work well with the same RAM.
(Here's the question.) Why does crucial.com sell different RAM sticks with different numbers for different MB's? My experience is the PC2100 I have is apparently compatible with three different MB's even when OC'ed as long as I don't push it to hard. Now running stable FSB 192 X 10.5 @ 2.025GHz. Had vcore at 1.7V multiplier 11 FSB 205 and it ran for a while and locked up so backed off to 1.65V.
I'm contemplating upgrading to PC2700 and would like to buy two 256 sticks that are compatible with my three MB's and hate to spend the money then have the RAM not work with all three. I know it's a funky way of doing business, swapping out RAM when I change computers about once a month, but I'm semi-retired and keep an eye on expenses for my compter hobby.
Suggestions for RAM that would be compatible for all three MB's appreciated. And someone please tell me why crucial has different model numbers for different MB's.
While I have you on the horn, like to say thanks to all those that have helped me so much here. I know I asked some dumb questions but noone ever intimidated me because I was OC'ing ignorant and I appreciate it. You're a good group and I really enjoy spending quality time at this fantastic website. Hey, how many 63 year old Hippies you know that OC and love it???
