View Full Version : Boredom.....
Now that I've got a slot 1 mb that have voltage adjustablility (Soyo 6BA+III), I figured I'd throw the old Celeron 300A in for a bit to see what happens.
Got 451 fine, but it set off the temp monitor after playing a game for a few minutes (50c).
Pulled it back out, and lapped the cpu and sink, Radio Shack thermal paste applied, and back in.
Not only doesn't set off the temp monitor now, It's holding 472 stable.
A guy I work with is thinking of having me build him a PC. (Just a basic rig, all he does is e-mail, surf, etc...not into 3D games) I was thinking of using this in that system, but maybe I'll reconsider that now....=)

Nostalgia is great, but it don't pay the bills, I know how u feel though,,,I have a **** 1 300a and I don't wan't to part with it either...but if I was offered money to build a comp, I would consider it gone in a second...as I have realised, that old tech'y doesn't sell well...and these newer procs are screaming with little money, and effort. with the money u can get back...you can get that proc you've been drooling over....all clockers drool over 1 proc or another...my mouth is all lathered up in antisipation of the next P4....I say take a picture of the chip for remembrance, and sell it.
before long you won't be able to give them away...make the scratch while u can
True enough. Since I posted this last night, I've done a bit more thinking on that.
I could build a rig for him using the 300A, and the A-Trend mb I've got here (VIA Apollo Pro 133 chipset).
As he wouldn't be really getting into the 3d games, he'd never notice the fact the memory bandwidth is so low.
I've got a "shoppin list" for him in front of me.....I could build him a nice rig (300A @ 450, 128 MB ram, 20 GB hdd, 40x cd, choice of ethernet card or modem, for like $350/370......) Thats figuring $100 for the mb/cpu combo, which I see a few of in the classifieds here.
I'll run it by him on Monday.
If I can't find a BE6 II for under $100....there's somethin' wrong.
Mr B
get him the bh6
my specs are
300a @ 300a
128 mb ram
4 gig hd
matrox mellenim II pci
although im planning to up the proccessor
to 700e PIII
and
40 gig quantum 7200 2mb 9ms ( only 150 at frys )
I've got my eye on the 30GB Maxtor 7200 at CompUSA for $119.00.
Just waiting for the week they have another nice MIR, and I'm there, with bells on!
Mr B
actually the hard drive
came with a mir
so it actually costs 120
P.S. i cant tweak my cele 300a
i go for 450 and it wont even boot
i believe i have the default fan..
and no extra cooling
I've got a generic twin fan setup on the 300A. Never had a mb that would allow me to up the voltage, til now.
They've got something similar to what I have for a hsf at CompUSA, for around $15...but if I was gonna spend any money, I'd save it towards that 700E you mentioned.
The 300A wouln't run 450 at default until I lapped the cpu and sink. If you've never done this to a cpu, read up on it on the front page here, in "CPU reveiws and tips".
Had to run it at 2.2v for 450 before, default now. 'Nuff said. I'd try to bump up your voltage first, if your mb has the provision for it.
