nice system, why such an old videocard model tho?
why not buy a 9600 pro or 9700 pro 0r 9800 pro or something like that

TOry, everything looks mighty good except...
WHAT THE HECK YOU DOING WITH A Ti4200 !?!? :-)
the system is awesome, but your video card's gonna be a HUGE bottleneck, especially if you're looking to get away with playing Hl II and Doom III
yea i agree, i think you ought to get something slightly better than a 4200, unless thats just to hold you out till hl2:D

and if you're waiting till then, then you're better off waiting to get a prescott / alderwood chipset :-)

P4 2.4c @ 3.1 gig
ulta pc3200 2x256mb ram
abit AI7 mobo
true power 500W psu....
and my dads vid card off of a 6 year old computer
its like a 16mb vid card, but its all i could find, and i cant afford a 256mb gforce 4 right now

well you did your homework, and you did great on the speakers,
but on memory you didn't say what brand and just P3200 @ 512x3
why 3 thats a little much 1.5 gig and using all 3 mem slots will disable dual channel, i think two chips in dual channel will peform
better than the 3 in single

yah go with just a gig of ram and put the money towards a better card
Hello,To all
Well i thank you all for the replys & help so here is
what i think i will try lit me know what you all think
i am going with this item here for now 9600 pro
& see how that works for me if i like it i was thinking
of going with this item here 9800 pro but again if
you guy's think i can do better then just lit me know
@ simpleman
Hmmm i don't know what i am doing it's my
first puter build but i will try 2 @ 512 now when
you say two chips in dual channel help need
you to give me more info so if i use just 2 @ 512
will that be using dual channel or is this a new
item i should buy
oh simpleman
i forgot to add for the Rams
could you give me some ideas
or a like on what brand to use
Thank you all

what memory are you using, all you said was 512x2 pc3200, theres a LOT of performance difference in all the brands, like corsair xms 512 mb pc3200 will be MUCH better then kingston valueram, just an example
Hello,DaRky4YoU
Oh sorry is this the info you are asking me for
if so here it is 512MB PC3200 232 - Level One Black DDR
not sure if this is what i should be using i'm
having a hard time with this Ram stuff so if you
could give me an idea or 2 & a link to some Rams
well so far it has been fun trying to find all
these items but i hope building this puter
is not as hard hehe help me
I thank you & all that have helped me
Thank you :D

Tory, take my word for , if yo're putting a system together, you're gonna see much more significant performance gain with spending your money on a 9800 PRo, than you would sticking to 512 meg of ram.
If you're going to be gaming, I'd highly recommend doing 2x256 for your memory, than buying a 9800 pro for around $275
Hello,To all
Well it's me again now after looking around
here is what i am thinking of for Rams
Specification 2@256
Manufacturer: Crucial
Speed: DDR400(PC3200)
Type: 184 Pin DDR SDRAM
Error Checking: Non-ECC
Registered/Unbuffered: Unbuffered
Cas Latency: 3
Support Voltage: 2.5V
Bandwidth: 3.2GB/s
Organization: 32M x 64 -Bit
now i am also going with the 9800 pro
again if you guy's think i can go with something better
please lit me know but man this Ram stuff is a head pain
Thank you all that helped me :D

Sounds like you will end up with a good rig. Don't forget to buy a coaxial spdif cable for optimal sound quality.
Hello,DaWiper
Thanks for the help but could you tell me what is
a coaxial spdif cable & where do i find it do you have
a link that i can have a look at what you just said
Thanks

hi tory,
the ram that you had before... PC3200 232 - Level One Black DDR is made by a company called Mushkin (just wanted to let you know that)... For ram, do not buy that crucial ram, as its cas latency is too HIGH! Let me tell you some good ram to buy... See if you can buy something called Corsair XMS or Kingston HyperX these are two very very good types of ram... Personally (just me) i would scrap the 9800 pro for a 9600xt (unless you play alot ALOT of computer games on your computer) you won't notice too much of a difference...
Dual Channel Ram is when you have two sticks of EXACTLY the same type of Ram. What it does (in a very very very simple and easy way) is that it uses both sticks at the same time, so essentially you are doubling your rams ability.. (For example... DDR 400 goes at 200mhz... Since it is DDR you multiply that 200 by 2 (this is how come its ddr 400)... Now you put two of the sticks in dual channel mode... 400*2=800! So essentially your ram is now going at 800mhz)
My advice for you is to read the stickies in the beginning of each section of this forum. They are extremely usefull and this way you will avoid getting confused by advices coming from different people with different preferences.
Example: some people might argue that Antec True550 is massive overkill for your system and they will recommend a Fortron 350W PSU (very good, waaaaaaaay underrated and a lot more cheaper than the Antec). So, the best for you is to go here (http://www.ocforums.com/vb/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=252752) , read that and chose the solution that is appropriate for you.
So, I think what I'm trying to say is that first you should find what you want. Don't get me wrong, there is no problem whatsoever if you start asking questions now, but the process of building you first machine will be a little longer this way...
I would personally just buy 1 512 stick for the time being, which usually results in a 5%-10% perfomrance drop, but you still have the ability to get a gig of RAM and go dual channel later. Otherwise you have to sell your current sticks to upgrade the RAM.
Otherwise I think it looks good.
That's like a one thousand dollar system, and it's achilles heel is the video card??? Get the hell outta here.
I agree with everyone else, man... shift some of the investments in that system towards a better video card unless you simply do not play games at all.
The max power your system will probably ever use is around 450Watts, if that! What are you spending on that power supply?

What are you going to use the system for? Its hard to say what you need without knowing that.
Are you planning on overclocking right away, or just leave that for later after you get used to things?
Everything you have chosen so far, after a little help in this thread, is great. You probably are better off with 2x256 ram unless you use programs like photo editors for a living. I agree you want at least the 9600, forget the 4200, unless you play almost zero games. Even then, just on a $ for $ basis, get the better card.

If your looking for a good deal on memory check these guys www.hardcorecooling.com (http://www.hardcorecooling.com) I've had good luck with both their generic and the OCZ memory they carry. Fast shipping if you live on the East coast anyway.
As for the vid card look into the 9700pro, a bit faster than the 9600xt

Yeah I would take that advice to save up, but went you do decide to purchase the 2nd stick of memory make sure to stick with the same brand and model of memory. Also another thing would anyone forecast that the 9700 and/or 9800 would get cheaper went PCI-Express reveal during the next quarter? If so then you might want to purchase at that time. But hey... if you need it buy it now. Otherwise that a very good setup for your rig, and good luck on your very first rig, I remember my first system it was a P133 build from salvage Dell OptiPlex parts from my school.

don't confuse dual channel...
you can use dual channel with all 3 slots...
however channel 0 (slot 1 usually colored different) has to equal channel 1 (slot 2 + slot 3)
For example (assuming all same type..pc3200 or pcxxxx) you could use a 512mb stick in slot 1 (channel 1) and 2x256 in slot 2 + slot 3 (channel 0)
therefore channel 0 + channel 1 = 512+512 = 1Gb
this would run in dual channel... this is only for the amd motherboards... the Pentiums use 2 DIMM or 4 DIMM slots... I dont know about these... (i would assume channels divided equally between slots)
but for your computer i would stick with the 2x256 pc3200 (corsair would be my pick for brand) and stick them in slot 1 and slot 2... this will be using dual channel...

review of dual channel... can you run dual channel on 512x2 but different brand names and spec(cas, timings) or do they have to be the exact same sticks.
drewmister

In short yes...
However they have to both be the same kind of ram... for instance... both pc2700 or pc3200... However it is not recommended and stability can become a huge issue.... Most importantly your ram can only run as fast as your slowest stick...
I would just stick with the same brand, same model......
Hey,To all
First like to say thanks for all the great info & help
with my first build so far it's been some great fun
but i will do as you all have said & also look at some
of the links some of you posted for me once again
Thank you all for the help :D
