I didn't know where to put this thread since for some other thread I need 250 posts, which I don't have. The question is, I want to buy something from a Canadian auction that I found on ebay.com not ebay.ca I emailed them asking if they'll ship to US but I haven't recieved a responce yet and the bidding ends in 6 hours. So is it safe to say that I can place my bid without having to worry about them not wanting to ship to USA? Oh and as for shipping costs can I just assume that it should be no more than 30-50% more than the USA to USA shipping costs?

Thanks
Vio

I would say most do, personally I've found it cheaper to ship to the US in some cases than in my own country

The Canadian ebay site is ebay.ca so if you can see it on ebay.com it usually means it available for shipment to the USA.

JDXNC has it, if it eBay.com and not .ca they are intending to sell it in North America. If you read the shipping info it should say where they will ship if not you are bidding blind because they can post any shipping cost they want after the auction.
Also in the "Shipping and payment details" at the end of the page it should say "Will ship to Canada, United States"

OK I'll go ahead and email them one more time unless this explains is all.

Will ship worldwide.
Seller's payment instructions & return policy:
Paypal Pref. Buyer to pay shipping. Reciept of shipping fee's will be scanned and emailed for your confermation that you are not being overcharged.

I would like to see that in more auctions, I found a good deal for $1.99 for 4 80mm blue LED fans but the guy stated $15 for shipping.... jeeze, where is he making the money

a word of advice, when you send payment add a note in there asking them to mark gift on the postal paper work.also send them an e-mail asking them. that way they'll for sure see it.

i sell on e-bay and i have shipped to canada, the first item i sold in canada, the buyer e-mailed me and ask me to mark the shipping paper work as gift.
i had no idea what he was talking about, he filled me in on the out
of country papper work , and that if i would mark it gift then it would save him about $30.
so i would imagine that from canada to US would have a charge
also.

Ok I hope someone replies to this before the auction finishes, or I'll just make a new thread. I have a question on what's the best way to bid. Should I wait til the last 5 minutes and then place a bid that's a tiny bit higher than the existing bid or what should I do? Just place a bid that is as much as I'm willing to pay? But then I'm afraid that someone might outbid me by 50 cents. I suppose I don't fully understand ebay but please some advice guys. Thanks

EDIT: Actually now that I remembered what I was worried about it's this; the more bidders the higher the price gets puched, right? That's what I was worried about, so is it best for me to wait til 5-10 minutes before the auction finishes and then bid?

My method is to think of my max I will pay for the item including shipping and to place that bid in the last 10 seconds.... works almost every time, unless someone is willing to pay more than me. Set a price and don't go over it, otherwise you can blow a lot of money on ebay.

Ok great advice. Now how do I know when 10 seconds before the end is? :'( The other thing is the price listed currently 42.00 CD; is that the only thing I'd have to beat? Is that like the other person's highest bid? Because if their highest was 45 and someone else bid 42 then that would bring it up to 42 or? (sorry, still new to ebay) or does it just display the highest bidders max bid. :s So confusing :( But if it succeeds, so rewarding

Edit: Ok there's 23 minutes 38 seconds left. I guess that's where I get my seconds from. Sooooooo, since I'm on DSL my best bet is to restart my PC (since it's lagging from 2 weeks uptime) and make sure my bandwidth is all free and keep refreshing the page til it says something like 30 seconds? And then I enter my bid right? If it's all correct then here goes nothing in 22 minutes. *fingers crossed*

Ebay uses "proxy" bidding, ebay explains it much better than I can:

eBay uses a helpful bidding system (called proxy bidding) to make bidding on auctions more convenient and less time-consuming for buyers.

Here's how it works:

When you place a bid, you enter the maximum amount you'd be willing to pay for the item. Your maximum amount is kept confidential from other bidders and the seller.
The eBay system compares your bid to those of the other bidders.
The system places bids on your behalf, using only as much of your bid as is necessary to maintain your high bid position (or to meet the reserve price). The system will bid up to your maximum amount.
If another bidder has a higher maximum, you'll be outbid. BUT, if no other bidder has a higher maximum, you win the item. And you could pay significantly less than your maximum price!

This means you don't have to keep coming back to re-bid every time another bid is placed.

Just keep refreshing the page and you'll see how much time on the auction left near the title, if your within the last minute you should be fine, as you get used to it, you'll get better at bidding later. Just give it a go and see how it works out :)

PS... sorry on being so slow on my last reply ;)

Thanks you were very very helpful JDXNC, but alas I lost the bidding. Not because I didn't bid in time but because I saw it go from 42CD to 71 CD in the last 30 seconds. Pretty astonishing, but I think as I get the hand of this and when I find some more Voodoo 5500s to bid on I'll eventually find something much cheaper (didn't feel like paying 55+8-10 for shipping, since I see many voodoo 5500s go for that price) I am kicking myself very very very hard for not buying the Voodoo 5500 PCI I saw going for 39.99 as the "Buy it now" option. Greedy me thought I could get it cheaper. But I guess we learn something new everyday.

Once again thank you so much on your explanations and I will be going to Florida tomorrow f (at 4am, foolish parents) and then when I get back it will be time to bid again, but next time I'll win.
