View Full Version : [SOLVED] Too hot or just right????
Wassup fools,
HAd a question for you all. Last night I left my computer running before I went to sleep. I had it overclocked at about 134Hz with 1.85V (maybe 1.9V cant remember). My CPU is a PIII 800e. When I woke up this morning, my computer was like in a sleep mode and my CPU was SOOOOO HOT. I couldnt even touch it it was like on fire, thank god it didnt catch fire. I immediately turned that **** off and let it cool down. I supposedly have a working peltier in there, but now I question if it really works. I am running at about 115Hz today with 1.75V and it is fine. My Mobo monitor says i am at 78 Fahrenheit. What do you think happened last night. I feel my CPU right now and it feels really COLD, just like it normally does. I don't want this to happen again. Is my mobo still too hot at 78 and what can i do to avoid having **** like that happen again.
Thanks!

Some computers in the BIOS have a feature that will cut off all external power, ie hard drives, CD-roms, anything connected to the power supply except for the motherboard, It also can cut off power to your CPU fan, which it once did to me... Do you think you might have that? Windows will also cut off your power if you enable some of your features, so check into your suspend setings...
If you are using a software cooler then it will not be working once you are in suspend or sleep!! At least that is my best guess as to why your temp went up. The CPU fan is also a valid guess but with no fan I would have expected a dead CPU since the voltage was so high!!
I don't know what the hell happened. It was probably something like that, though I know I didnt set any settings to have it shut off. I wanna avoid it again. I probably won't be overclocking very much until I get the issue resolved.
The bigger question is my mobo monitor says im at 78 fahrenheit. Does that sound right?
I'm at 80 F or 27 C so that sounds right.
So your Windows isn't set to go to sleep or standby after a long period of unuse?
I think the problem was that the Hard Disk was set to shut off after like a couple of hours of inactivity. Also it was told to go in standby in like a couple of hours too. I hadn't set those to Never. Is that probably why it got so hot, cuz my hard drive shut off? Is it good to set your cmputer to go into Standby?
Get back to me about where I should put these settings if you are overclocking. Thanks
You shouldn't allow the computer to go to standby or sleep if you are using a software cooler!!
I don't know what you are talking about when you say a software cooler? What do you mean? I wanna get one if I can. All I'm running in terms of software is Motherboard Monitor 4.18. I have a peltier cooler on my CPU along with two fans blowing on it.
What should I do with the settings then, in terms of standby and the like?
I have standby set to "never" when overclocking.
Coolers include the following:
Rain
Waterfall
CPUCool
Wincooler
and my favorite which is called Softcooler
CPUCool and Waterfall are shareware.
The others are freeware but Rain and Softcooler are no longer on their authors websites. They are available on some other sites.
I like Softcooler because it is small, uses little RAM and little Windows resources. It used to be available for free from MSI motherboards.
Wincooler is a available at:
http://www.wincooler.com
All of these cooler programs allow the CPU to work less when it is needed less. This on off cooling by software doesn't seem to hurt performance.
That's good to know. I will download one of those. I just tried d/ling wincooler, but it gave me all kinds of violation errors. I think it is because I am running Windows 2000, and possibly Wincooler does not support that. anyways, do you know of a GOOD software cooling program that supports win2k?
If you do, get back to me! if you have a copy of Rain or softcooler you could send me (that is assuming that they are compatible with win2k), I would greatly appreciate it. Just send me an email!
Thanks alot man!
I also heard that Win2k has a built in cooling feature? Whatsup with that? Is this true? Where do I find this?
