View Full Version : Unlocking "factory Locked" Bartons!

This is covered on a thread on the generic cpu forum - however as it is specific to AMD I thought I would include it on this forum as well.
The link suggests that by tricking the Barton cpu into thinking its a mobile cpu by adjusting the L5 bridges you can then open all the L6 bridges in order to give access to all multis using special software!

I'm looking to set the record straight... I have bulk88 posting on December 27, 2003 about the PowerNow unlock, then I find a lot of posts claiming they're the ones who figured it out, finally I have you here:

http://forums.amdmb.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=281060

talking about it on December 18, 2003.

1. All other sites post after December 27, 2003, except for bulk88, right?

2. When did you first attempt to do the stuff you talk about on December 18, 2003 on a LOCKED CPU?

So... it's you that gets the credit for the idea and bulk88 for the first successful attempt to implement it on a locked CPU, right or wrong?

Fab51 page was the first to discover that L5 bridge changes CPU to mobile. They didn't, hovewer, tested mobile CPUs in desktop motherboards nor do they explained L6 and L8 bridges meaning. From what I understand they also didn't tried to modify desktop part to mobile. I did test it because I wanted to change multiplier from Windows, not to unlock CPUs. Then I discovered (with help of my software) what do L6 and L8 bridges do. So the discovery of multiplier changing through PowerNow! on desktop CPUs is my job. I did this in middle of November on unlocked Tbred, posted about this in middle of December on a magazine I work for (www.svethardware.cz), then on my homepage did translation to english.

bulk88 and a man called Eversor from OCWorkBench were the first to discover this mod works on locked CPUs also. bulk88 didn't have necesarry motherboard to change multiplier so it freezed for him but he was able to make mobile CPU by modifying L5 what is enough for this to work - he posted about this on 28th December. Eversor on 29th December was the first who changed multiplier on locked CPU - he had SiS chipset and also modded L6 bridges to gain multiplier 12x istead of default 11x.

I got the idea of it from Petrs site and the problems of the locked multi. I am the first who seriously tried doing this on this forum. I originally gave this as a idea to others, but I realized I had locked procs and the rage made me do the mods myself. There was a user who tried but said it didn't work and didn't document what he exactly did. What he did was here

I belive he didn't have the experiance or understanding to do anything. He just cut L6 without ever connecting the L5 mobile bridge, doomed failure. Also he never tried to use a program to change the multi.

The official date when I proposed it on a locked was 12-27-03 at 9:20pm. http://www.ocforums.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&postid=2380032#post2380032 and I seriouly thought it through. When I did it get powernow enabled was on 12-28-03 at 4:45pm http://www.ocforums.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&postid=2381758#post2381758 Eversor's first post and the one that said he enabled the powernow was on 12-29-03 at 7:38pm My MB doesn't allow for powernow (AMD760, Asus A7M266) so I never was able to change the speed but I did enable the powernow mode.

I would say I am the first to SERIOUSLY propose and do it on this forum. I only found out about OC Work bench later on. The AMD forum I have never seen until now. I do HAVE to give credit to Petr for pioeering the ability to turn a desktop into a mobile and for discussing it. Although he did not say that it can be tried on locked procs. I did not get the idea of using the mobile mod on a locked from anyone, I invented it myself. If other people happened to invent it close to my time I didn't copy them. I THINK Eversor copied me, but AMD forum couldn't have.

Also helpful suggestions and ideas did apear on OC workbeanch but they were vague The first mention of it on OC work occured at 12-27-03 by Onedragon, next at 7:00PM DOre asked Onedragon if he was refering to locked procs. On the AMD forum it was propsed on the 18th.

I got this idea of the mobile mod on a locked from someone who posted a link to petr's site. Also Fab51 offered some less useful advice but still important. I thought I was the first to suggest doing the XP-mobile mod on a locked proc. I guess it was a coincidence. I did not get the idea from those sites and I never have heard of them. Anyways I am the first to seriously try this on OC forums.

There's been limited success posting other multilpiers with these locked Bartons but not with nForce2 mobos. Basically, the method involves heavy modding of the locked chips, turning them from Desktop to Mobile chips. AMD Mobile CPUs have this 'PowerNow' feature which allows voltage and multiplier changes in order to preserve battery life.

You need to have motherboard/chipset/BIOS support for PowerNow which not all boards do.

You also need to boot into Windows with your locked multiplier and the FSB with which you can boot into Windows but you cannot change the FSB inside Windows.

So with this method, MHz Speed = [FSB] x multiplier

FSB can be changed only before you boot into Windows but
multiplier can only be changed after you boot into Windows.

...with limited success so far.

Needless to say, this is not for your average user.

Now I recall a program that allows one to change the fsb while in Windows?

Does anyone else know of this?

I must research...

You can use CPUFSB or CPUcool to change the FSB from within windows and some Nforce2 boards can use Nvidia system utility to do it as well.

CPUFSB (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=420)

Nvidia System Utility (http://www.nvidia.com/object/sysutility_1.0)

It's no use. People who could mod their locked CPUs into mobiles and they had mobos that allowed for the mobile PowerNow feature, they couldn't use those progs to switch FSB from within Windows, turns out.

Yes you can use the to do that from within Windows but then, it turns out, you can't do PowerNow on those setups.

nForce2s are not the ones you can use for switching multipliers from within Windows.
