View Full Version : Cooling question on PIII

Before I go out and buy a PIII 700Mhz in FC-PGA format and a Slotket card for my Slot-1Asus P2B Rev.1.02 mobo, I want to know if I should get the OEM or Retail version of thew CPU to get the "default" heatsink and fan. I don't really care about the warranty and manuals that come with the Retail version, but I am pretty sure that the current hsf/fan setup I have on my PII 400 won't fit on the PIII, correct?
So, which heatsink and fan combination should I get? Should I get the Intel-supplied combo? Something bigger? I am not after a massive OC.
I have just completed my 1st OC by bumping the FSB from 100Mhz to 112Mhz to push my PII to 448Mhz, a 12% gain, but mostly to test the rest of my components at a higher FSB; so far, so good. CPUCool shows a steady 28C. Maybe I will try 133Mhz, but the posts I read here suggest that the P2B is not stable at that speed. Plus, my 128MB of PC100 10ns RAM is of the generic, no-name kind, so I don't know if it will take 133Mhz. Plus, the PCI D-Link NIC, 3com 56K and CL SoundBlaster PCI-128 cards may not like that either. AGP slot currently holds an ATI Xpert98 that will get upgraded soon, so no worries there.
It all boils down to the Asus S370DL Slotket which can only step down to 1.8v from my standard mobo's 2.0v, with the PIIIs cC0 wanting 1.65v. So, at a higher vcore voltage, it will heat up more and therefore may require more cooling than supplied by Intel. What do you suggest?

FWIW, the MSI Master 6905 v2.1 sloket has much better voltage control, down to 1.3v. There should be no conficlts with using a sloket of a differnet brand than the mobo. If you already have the Asus sloket, 1.8v isnt unusual for an overclock, nor is it a big concern for heat IMHO. I would not go with the standard hs/fan tho. No your current hs/fan wont fit. A GlobalWin FOP32 or 38 is kinda cheap, or a Golden Orb would do nicely. I used a Gorb on my celermine 566@850 1.85v with very good temps. I now use the FOP32 which dropped temps 5-6*f..... The Gorb is cheap nowadays and it looks real cool, plus it works lots better than the Wintel combo.... gl

Aaaahhh..NO. Cause a Gorb "looks real cool". That may be the worst idea for a recommendation on a heatsink/fan that I've ever heard. Gorbs are remedial at best. Go with an Alpha or the GLobal Win, keeping in mind the FOP38 sounds like a jet engine. Maybe the FOP32. My TBird 750@945 stays at 32c with my Alpha 6035.
GOod luck
If you're gonna be overclocking and upping the core voltage, the retail H/S fan won't cut it. Your best choice is an Alpha PEP66. With my PIII 700 @ 994 MHz and the core at 1.95V, it keeps the max temp to 34C. Here's a link to get the PEP66 for $31 + about $6 shipping. They also have the Asus Slotket for $15.45 and won’t add more than a dollar of so to the shipping for it. Also highly recommended is their 128 MB Mosel Vitalic CAS2 PC133 SDRAM for $54. I have two sticks running set at 2-2-2 with the FSB at 142 MHz. I’ve had them running with the FSB as high as 155 MHz. KD has a high resellers rating and ship the same day.

BTW, I bought a retail version just for the 3-year warranty. A little insurance against an overclocking "accident".
I'll third that motion, here. I just replaced my Gorb with a PEP66. Dropped my temps considerably over the gorb. My Celeron runs in excess of 1 GHz, and the gorb just couldn't hack it.
The extra cooling of the PEP66 also let me get another 1.5 MHz of FSB, as well....
Personally, I don't mind a loud fan, I'd know IMMEDIATELY if it cut out, and hopefully have enough time to hit the kill switch before the cpu blows. If that's what it takes, let my rig sound like an F-16 at takeoff....=)

I've got two vp boxes running with two PIII700's in each. I've got one set of cpu's cooled with arctic silver and one set cooled with alpha pep66t and there is no difference in temps. All four cpu's just happen to love 1.8 volts to hit 1 gig (coincidence) so they make great testbeds for heatsinks. All four have the Delta fans and yes, both boxes sound like jet engines with the four case fans running also. But, I would know immediately if any of the cpu fans cut out and would be able to (hopefully) hit the kill switch to save the cpus. Also, if you can't buy the retail version (which gives a 3 year warranty), attempt to buy from an OEM supplier who honors the full 1 year warranty Intel offers them. I order cpu's from Kaypro. They are OEM and have a 1 year warranty. Just a little FYI, not trying to pimp them or anything. Thanks.
The P2B does not the ability to read the thermal diode from a PIII. I'm wondering where you are getting your temperature readings from? I attached a thermoster to both the JTPWR and JTCPU. I placed 1 on the outside of the HS and 1 as close to the cpu die as possible. I'm getting readings of 35, 36 respectively. This is with the stock hsf.
alphas rock. with pep66 and delta fan i got 8-10c cooler. get the oem chip and order an alpha! only comes out 5-10 dollars more for superior cooling and your computer will sound like an F-16 roaring down the runway
