Is this a good thing or a bad thing? I mean, its great some larger manufactors are using AMD...but how is AMD going to gain a rep for reliability with people like my Dad when they're tied to crap boxes like eMachines?

That laptop actually seems pretty nice. I tend to think it will be junky or use other junky components though, only because its an Emachine. The components they listed seemed really good for that price so far.
I heard only a 2-3 companies actually make laptops. Everybody else just has the 2-3 companies make the computers for them with their name on them.

Actually, eMachines has gotten better in the past few years, and its now a force to be reckoned with, being the 4th largest computer retailer... but anyway, companies like HP and Toshiba have used AMD here and there for a long time, its just that Intel still dominates because of brand recognitiion. So, it really isn't good or bad, just more of the same.

Exactly, I have noticed a lot of improvements on eMachines part, I think they have finnaly found out they can't sell garbage for very long and get away with it. I've seen some eMachines notebooks reviewed lately and they help up pretty darn good.

Hmmmm...........I have some comments about Emachines, they are garbage. Well at least the cd burners they use in them. I witnessed an Emachine "eat" a cd. Yes, eat a cd. It was in the cd-rom drive & after about 10 minutes it made some really strange noises. Opened up the cd-rom to find the cd in a million pieces!!!! Probably the craziest thing I have ever seen!! Maybe it was hungry.......

Quite common with any brand 52x or higher CDROM and cheap cd's, not just an eMachine problem.

I think Intel also dominates because the "average" person looks for the highest numbers (e.g. clock speed) and assume it is better.

Yeah, its not because of a junky cd-drive, it's just a fault with new 52x and 56x cd-rw and cd-rom drives. Some discs just can't withstand the rotational forces. I know someone that bought a name brand 52x cd-rw drive, and had an store bought audio cd shatter on him.

Hey, I just went to emachines website, www.e4me.com. And guess what, it says the notebook has a dual format dvd burner !!! Couldnt believe, it, cnet and best buy state it has a dvdrom/cdrw. But i doubt emachines could be wrong, maybe they changed it and added dvd burner, which would be smart. Now i actually want to get one, i liked it b4, but with no dvd burner, i was gonna hold off till they came out with a model with a dvd burner. I for one, work for at best buy, pc dept of course, and emachines has came along way. If it really does have a dvd burner like the emachines website says, i'll definetly be getting of of these bad boys.

Oops. Just went back, and actually, they did bring out another model with a dual format dvd burner, the M6807. I thought it was the same one. Guess best buy will get it soon.

You should probably wait until they (and everyone else) come out with a version that has a dual-layer dvd burner...then it will be amazing.

E-Machines used to be crappy celery boxes with low amounts of ram, cheap flimsy cases, third world motherboards and ****ty sound systems... they've improved in all those aspects since that time and if I were buying a laptop I'd probably go with one.

Personally i don't want a dvd burner on my laptop for video archiving. Thats what the workhoarse desktop is. I do want the data capacity of dvd cuz i hate backing up to a huge pile of cd's. Circuit city has the one with the dvd burner for $1549 after rebate - http://www.circuitcity.com/detail.jsp?oid=86637&WT.mc_n=4&c=1&b=g&WT.mc_t=U
