View Full Version : do YOU know the difference?
what's the difference between
FC-PGA
P-PGA
SOCKET 7/370
SOCKET A
WILL A HEATSINK THAT FITS ON AN FC-PGA FIT ON AN "SOCKET A"
HOW ABOUT A HEATSINK THAT FITS FC-PGA....WILL IT ALSO FIT ON AN SOCKET 7/370???
LETS SEE WHO KNOWS THEIR STUFF!!!!

FC-PGA Flip Chip Pin Grid Array (the cpu has been flipped over and the core is exposed on top)
P-PGA Plastic Pin Grid Array - older versions of P3 (I think), P2, Celerons etc.
Socket 7 is older version of PGA socket, 370 looks very similar but has more pins.
Socket A was, I believe, originally an old Intel socket prior to Socket-7 but it didn't stick. It's now the new standard for AMD chips.
If I'm wrong on any of this I apologize - I'm sure someone'll correct my blunder ???
100 %...gold star for you.
Don't think the Socket A was ever in intel's lineup...thought that was AMD's design, but I could be wrong, too.

No one answered his question about whether all would accept the same heat sinks.

You SHOULD be able to fit A/370 HSF's on to the other ones.. i wouldnt go the other way though.... older ones arent as good at cooling and stuff.. oh yeah... make sure it doesnt squash your cpu as well too.

I've bought a cooler and guess what's on the box?
Cooler for Socket 370, 7, A

For those who are curious, Socket 7 was for the old Pentium and AMD K6 processors. Needless to say, Socket 7 is now obsolete. So is PPGA, since most CPUs now dissipate so much heat they would be impossible to cool to any significant ability if the core still faced down instead of up...
