So I've had so much troubles with my Athlon 64 3000+ system, I've acctually returned it to ncix.com since they gave me nothing but **** when I tried to go to them for help.

So I'm instead picking up a P4 2.8C and an Asus P4C-800E mobo.

I have some 2X512MB sticks of Kingston Hyper X PC 3200 Ram.

Now I want to know if it seems reasonable just to hit 3.2 Ghz on stock cooling from this.

I also have the choice of picking out a 2.6C would this be better?

I'll probally be trying to run in a 5:4 divider first

both the 2.6c and the 2.8 will hit 3.2ghz real easy.
I'm predicting.....3.5ghz for each chip.

250fsb and the 5:4 ratio will do wonders for the 2.8c....
giving you 3.5ghz, at low voltage, and thus, stock cooling should be fine.

please look into better cooling later...as this will help you when room temps get way too hot.

nothing wrong with your choice of mobo, yet look into the abit AI7.....strong OCer and the vdimm goes upto 3.1v
the abit IS7 is another cheap choice.

btw, you'll loose almost no performance if you goto 3:2 ratio, over the 5:4...intel realy did a fine job on the new chipsets.

Good then I'll try that ;)

I got pretty good airflow in my case, it's an Antec AMG1080 case, 5 casefans, rounded IDE cables and everything. But I need to wait for parts to get in :)

PS what do you concider "low voltage" for the vcore?

Try to hunt down 2.8 SL6Z5 MO stepping for best overclocking

I'll take what I can get ;)

I can't wait for prescott which is too bad, but being in canada, we get things like 1.5 months after the US has gotten theirs, hell all the stores in my city haven't even gotten A64s yet.

Goodluck Shift_. As I'm sure you have read around here, overclocking in is luck of the draw. Sure some chips OC better, but that's not always the case.

I just upgraded not to long ago to a P4P800 and a 2.6C. I tested about a half a dozen 2.6C chips from the SL6WS and the SL6WH either from Costia Rica or Malaysia, and none of them overclocked well... I don't have any of the production dates or batch numbers anymore, but the newest I tried was early December. Needless to say, none of them overclocked that well. I didn't spend a great deal of time with them, I put them in, cranked them up to 3250 (250 X 13) and tested with Prime. None were stable even at 1.65 vcore. I know I could have gone higher(vcore), but that is my limit. I know it's not my system holding me back, I "borrowed" a 2.4C from work that runs at 3200 (267 x 12) all day at stock vcore. Now I'm running a 2.8C (SL6Z5 - 3334A635 - 12/15/03 Costa Rica and it's a 3500 (250 x 14) and stock vcore (set to 1.525 in the bios). Finally I'm happy. :) Anyways, the other day my buddy got in three more 2.8C (SL6Z5) all from Costa Rica, one was dated Dec 18/03, the others sometime in mid November. He tested them all, and none of them would do 3500 (250 x 14) at stock, or even 1.7. This was tested on his system. I borrowed the newest one of the batch to test for him, since maybe it was his system, so I slapped the Dec 18 chip into my system and NOPE! No post at stock vcore... turned it up to 1.60, and it posted but blue screened going into windows.

So as many have said, and I would have to agree, it's luck of the draw.

As for obtaining 3.2G, I agree, they should all do it, but I would think you would have better luck with a 2.8C SL6Z5. I'm not to sure if you can request a S code at nicx, but you can always ask.

It's all luck of the draw...

I got a refurb 2.8 D1 stepping from newegg. I didn't expect it to be a good overclocker. It runs at 240fsb at 1.55V. It will hit 250fsb stable but needs a lot more voltage. It runs 1.1 with PC 3700 at 240.

Well I'm NOT dealing with NCIX again.

I've been through enough BS with them. No more mail ordering for me. I'm sure it would of been 100X better if I was in Burnaby or Vancouver...but I'm in Winnipeg.

A local shop here (huge Overclocking shop) will be getting me a 2.8C they said all of the 2.8Cs they've been getting lately is the M0 stepping :)

didn't realise your from canada....
that store sounds nice.

again, look into the AI7 from abit...
it's my top choice for all the 800bus CPUs.

good luck

shift, i'm also in winnipeg...what part of the city are you in? i'm wondering what this "huge overclocking shop" you speak of is.

if its MLH, then yea, they are good guys. but i wouldn't count on a M0 stepping. recently, i put together a 2.4c sl6z3, ic7-max3 and 2x256 of khx3000. the one guy i always talk to at MLH didn't even know what a M0 stepping was. but there are a couple of guys who work there who have very nice rigs themsleves, and are good sources of info.

but anyhow, i got my stuff from www.zipzoomfly.com, and apparently they are still shipping sl6z3's and sl6z5's. shipping to canada isn't that bad, as i didn't have to pay any taxes (ouch 14%!).
