View Full Version : [SOLVED] RAM opinions
I have two sticks of RAM that are supposed to be CAS 2. Sandra reports that the 128 stick is CAS 2 to
only 100 memory speed. The 256 stick of Micron memory I have is rated CAS 2 to 133.
So I am trying to overclock at 980 on a PIII 700. The cheaper memory is more stable (with just that one stick in the machine) than the more expensive Micron memory. (To reach 980 on either I need to run at CAS3.)
I am sure I paid too much for the Micron memory. The CAS 3 was cheaper and it likely would have been just as stable as what I bought.
My the question is:
Which is more likely to help in the future - memory rated at 150 MHz or Muskin 133 sticks?
What is your opinion? (Thanks for the idea of this post Batboy!)

You want O/C a PIII 700 (7x100Fsb) @980 (7x140Fsb), but @930 (7x133Fsb) are you rock stable?
If right, I think that you need Dimm Pc150 (something like Kingmax Tiny Bga Cas 3-3-2), so you can go @140Fsb and over, if the Cpu it's still alive :-)
Has anyone compared Kingmax 150 to their previous RAM for overclocking ability?

Why don't you try Mushkin PC150? They're fast. I haven't seen any other RAM with faster timing than Mushkin's PC150@ 3.2.2 @ Clock Cycle Time of 6.6ns and Clock Access Time of 4.5 ns.

I'd recommend either the Mushkin rev2 or rev3. Most PC150 is either overclocked 133 or rated at CAS 3.

Thanks for your comment, Milk Dude and other guys. Good topic, Marty. This all helped me narrow down my decision to either the Mushkin PC-133 rev 3 or the Mushkin PC-150. Leaning towards two 256 meg sticks of 150, maybe. There is a special on a 4 pack of 128 meg 133 rev 2, but many boards (like mine) only have 3 DIMM slots.
In answer to why I wasn't considering the Muskin 150, I went to their web site and must have missed it or forgottent that I saw it.
Who has the best deals on Muskin sticks??

Forgive me but I thought that you got higher(better) memory performance from 140FSB CL2 then 145 FSB CL3.
I thought that the latency was what really hurt performance.

My Kingmax PC150 256MB sticks do 2-2-2 up to ~147fsb
Does 3-2-2 up to ~155fsb and 3-3-2 as high as it'll go (~160fsb)
Sandra memory benches are higher than everything but the P4.
