View Full Version : Normal CPU temp?

I've been reading the posts for a while now, didn't find anything that could answer my main question yet. So here is my situation, PIII 667 on an ASUS CUSL2 with 128megs of 133mhz ram. Not overclocked.
Temp under load 45 degrees C in the ASUS PC probe proggie and MBM. But in the Bios, it says the CPU is running around 15 degrees lower. I don't have a fancy HSF, just the one I bought with the CPU last week.
I keep my case open so that helps keep the temp about 3-4 degrees lower than what it would be closed.
Is that a normal non-overclocked temperature?
Now I, gradually, upped my FSB to 159mhz, setting my ratios to 133:100:33, giving me about 795mhz and the CPU temp went up to 46. I know lower temp is better, but is 46 degrees C OK? Or I'd rather say is a 1 degee increase in temp good for that 128mhz OC?
I like to try and keep my chip temp under 40oC and would say that anything under 50oC is okm it's when you start reacing 50oC and over that I would get worried, when you say you have the cooler that you bought with it do you mean the standard intel one that comes in the box? if so these are ok when you don't overclock but aren't usually up to much when you start to overclock, some thermal compound between the heatsink and chip will help a lot if you don't already have some, Artic silver is the best and costs about $7 or so for a tube that will do around 10-20 aplications, It's also a good idea to have a couple of case fans, either a 60mm or 80mm one behind the chip and an 80mm one at the front bottom of the case, this is normally better than having the case off.

It does seem slightly high to me, I would estimate that they average around the 40c mark.
You might also want to make sure that the air path is clear, tidy any cables out of the way and make sure there is plenty of space between your cards so allow for airflow.
More fans help and the better heatsink you can afford will always help.
If you still find things a bit warm then you could go the whole hog and get a peltier just as long as you have plenty of extraction to get rid of the system temp.
Hope this helps.
Eidolon, i had the same exact problem but in Vice-Versa!!! my bios was saying that that my cpu temp was 45 degrees celcius, that was just in boot up!!, i figured that it would get MUCH hotter durring windows 2000 pro. loadup, but as SOON as windows got finished loading up i immidiately opened up my asus probe and checked my cpu temp. and to my fricking surprise ASUS probe was saying that my cpu temp was 9degrees C.!!!! i was like NO WAY!! somethink is WRONG here!! so i did it again and again... and with every boot up i get the same thing to this day! dont kno why bios says that but im sticking to the pc probe

9 deg C??? How? Are you using a peltier? If not the only way your CPU is 9deg C is if your room temp it less than 9deg C...
also, when sitting in CMOS/BIOS the cpu will continue to warm up. I think it runs at near 100% while in CMOS/BIOS.
Something is wrong.

My inlaws have a PC with a P3 800eb running at default speed with original HSF on a MSI via-mobo. This thing is already around 40C idle and at 57C at full load?! Seems to be stable though, Sandra says the Vcore is 3.27 (yes three!) BIOS says it's at 37C looks like some wrong readings here! I can't find any CPU and/or voltage settings in the BIOS setup?!
