View Full Version : Temp ?.......whats the big deal?

I've see a lot of concern about temps here, mostly about keeping under the 40 degree mark. I have a p3 800eb running at 1 gig 166 fbs 1.7 vcore with a BIG cooler.
Now when the chip is at stock settings its running at around 40 at tick over, 42 when at 1gig. The temp goes up to 59 when under load. The chassis is at 32 at both settings. I have the cooler seated correct as I have checked.

The comp is rock solid at 1gig (its on all day and night) never flackers. I read that the recommended temps given by Intel are around the 60/70 mark for this chip (cant remember the exact figure).

So in short

If the comp is working rock solid, your temps (I don't think the temp gauges can be trusted too much, as far as I know the chip could be at 30) are within the recommended level given by the manufacturers. Why should I be busting a gut to try and get my chip temp below 40 at load. I feel this is a totally pointless exercise. It would be interesting to hear any comment as to why I would need to get my chip temp down.

Cooler the chip the longer the CPU can last.. but you are talking in the 4 to 10 year range. So I think you're right.. nobody is going to use the same chip for that long anyways.. I am impressed with your FSB level. very nice.. I dont really see why you have to lower your CPU temp.. What kind of RAM do you have anyways?.. and what CAS setting?

Most intel chips seem to get a little squirlly when the temp goes much past 37c when overclocked...and it doesn't seem to matter much at default speed 40c to 50c is fine when not o'c'ed....(.in my personal experience) your results may vary...obviously you got a good chip, and a decent overclock going

lowering the temp by 10 degrees will double the life of the cpu, that seems worth it to me.

CAS 2

256 meg, one stick is 100 mhz the other 133 ( could do with new faster mem, but hey, its working good and I aint got the cash at the mo )

Wow, you have different generic memory one rated at 100 and both running at 166. That is nice.
