Assuming the compression I would guess between 3-5 gigs.
DVD Shrink is very sweet considering its FREE!

You can compress as much as you want. It'll show you how big the file will be.

A dvd only holds up to 7 gigs. so after compression it would be less than a gig probably.

Actually, they can hold over 9 gigs. But with this program, you can just take out the movie, and forget about all the menus and extras, and the previews. Since your not burning to disk, the size of your hard drive will determine how much you want to compress.

The best thing to do is to get your hands dirty and use a separate ripper and then a vob to avi converter, I use smartripper or dvddecrypter for the dvd->hd copy and dvdx for the vob->avi converting. You can also try xmpeg for this task... All are free software. Get old of the xvid codec too and you could easily reach 700MB for a 1.5 hour movie. f you wan't the original dolby digital5.1 soundtrack as well you will reach 1.4GB(2cds). For adding the avi and ac3 soundtrack in the end you could use something like VirtualdubAC3.

Thats more what I was looking for. Cool thanks. I got the DVDDecrypter and DVDX to convert to a .avi but what do I have to do for the sound?

It's 4.7 gigs per layer, so they can hold 9.4 gigs, when they have dual layer. Which just about all DVDs have nowadays.

In dvdx you have to set the set 'export ac3' in the audio part of the input menu. Then you will end up with the finished coded avi file and a separate file for the ac3 audio. Then open virtualdub and load the avi. select 'wav or ac3 audio' in the audio menu. rember to select 'direct stream copy' in the video menu. Then select save avi in filemenu. About 3-5 mins later you have a avi file with dolby digital audio.
You need a ac3 filter to get sound when you watch the movie. Just google for 'ac3filter v0.63b'. It's a great filter. I use it myself.
I use SmartRipper (google it... i don't have a link ;) )
and then i use DVDtoOGM for converting to XviD and storing as an .ogm
it's a great way to back up my DVDs since they come out at around 700MB for the average 2hour movie and have great quality video AND you can mux the ac3 audio in for true 5.1 sound (if you have an appropriate system... i just do ogg audio)
I have your answer right here. Fisrt off you need 2 programs. One is DVD Decrypter which you already have. The other is Auto Gordian Knot. Heres the link to down load thathttp://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=64266&perpage=20&pagenumber=1
and heres the link to tell you how to use both properly in great detail.http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/autogk.htm
And if you have problems, theres a link at the bottom of the second link that basically brings you back to the first link. :D
It doesnt get much simpler that doing it like this. Hope this help you out.

After using dvshrink mine usually are aound 4 gigs. Store bought dvd's (movies) are 9gb's, that's why you need programs like dvd shrink, ect....because the only size recordable consumer media is 4.7gb, but I read an article where sony and other companies will soon release blue laser recorders which will in turn hold more that the red laser burners :D
Smartripper is another. Works great and it is also free. It picks out the main title and stuff so you dont get all the extra trailers etc. (but you can select them too if you want).

DVD's will only read in a DVD drive or a CDRW/ DVD combo (most common in laptops)
