View Full Version : I'm ready to put my 566 in the disposal... advice?

Bought a 566 Celeron, a Golden Orb and a SlotKet (abit) last week to replace my 300A(@464) in my Abit BH6 (revision 1).

Long story short.. I cannot get this thing to boot... it makes it to the windows screen and freezes. Upon reboot it frequently fails to post. This is at 8.5 * 100 with 1.7 V.

I can't get the thing to boot at ANY FSB over 66... with or without voltage tweaks. I thought it *might* boot at 1.75 or 1.8 - but my bios won't let me bump past 1.7 and the 'bios update trick' doesn't seem to work. I also noticed that setting the bios on the slotket seems useless.

I have played with all the settings I thought may help ... no avail...

Any advice?? Did I get the one friggin 566 that sucks ass?

Pissed off in south florida...

Maybe you just got a bum chip. I wouldn't stress it too much, if it boots at 566, sell it on ebay with the golden orb as a package, you'll probably get retail for it, and spend the money you make to buy a 600 and an alpha.

Don't get too *****ed off. Remember that BH6r1 doesn't officially support Cumine proc. I know a number of people are doing it but it may be the board. If ya have access to one, try something a little newer. I've got an old BH6 1.01 that I'd like to try my chip in, but I've got it set up in my kid's rig running an old Cel 300a @ 504. One day I'll check it out. I may be one of the unlucky BH6'ers also. :)

why are you starting it @ 8.5 times 100? Thats 850mhz not 566. Don't start o/c right off the bat. Try to boot into windows on default everything and see if it works. If it doesn't, then i would be happy to give you a little money for it/trade b4 you throw it out.

I was in your exact position a year ago. What slotket are you using? Does it have voltage settings? Does it have a switch for coppermine? If you have a generic cheapie slotket, the key might be buying a better one that is adjustable. When I put my Celly 566 on my old BH6, I used the Abit Slotket !!!, and then flashed the BIOS with the newest BIOS update too. Gives you more multipliers and voltage settings in Soft Menu. Make sure you're going into "user define" to change settings in the Soft Menu BIOS. Good luck, that chip will probably do 850 after some tweaking. You may need more voltage and don't forget to use a good thermal paste. Do you have extra case fans? Even the worst dog C-566 will do at least 75 fsb.

My experience has been that the 566's need more voltage to run at higher FSBs- some folks are lucky and can run the default voltage (or think they are...) but I'm sure they are a minority in the overall numbers. The solution will be to get more Vcore for your chip. Another slotket may do it.

More info:

I am using Radio Shack's thermal paste, an open case (good ambient temp) an Abit Slotket !!!

I can run the thing at std 566 no problem... I just can't get *any* overclock out of it. I am really suprised I cannot get it to do 75 Mhz FSB.

I will keep tweaking .. and try the Slotkets voltage jumpers again. Maybe it just needs to run for a few days..

If I cannot get it to clock I will probably sell it on Ebay and go back to my 300A@464 for a few months - then go big on a new system..

Any further advice would be appreciated.... if there is any :p

Here is what worked for me on my Abit Slotket !!!: FSB to auto, CPU type to coppermine, voltage to 1.75 and then set the bus speed using the BIOS Soft Menu. You might need to flash update the BIOS too.

I have used the BH6 version 1.01 with great success with the 566 Celeron. A couple of things, do you have the latest bios upgrade, for the version 1.01 it is the SS bios? Are you using an approved Slotlet such as the Abit Slotket III or the MSI 6905 Master. You cannot use a PPGA slotket with a FCPGA cpu.
Also, try your soft menu settings at 75 mhz with the voltage at 1.70 and turn off the halt on error settings.
Hope this helps.

By the way, if ya still can't get more volts I have an old proggie for the BH6 called Rise_of_Abit. With this prog you can get a wide range of voltages. If ya want it LMK.

This is the first I've heard of the voltage trick not working on any BH6. I flashed the SS bios to my BH6 1.0 twice raising the voltage each time. I would try to flash the bios one more time. Make sure it is set to the highest voltage available before flashing. Assuming you're using the SS bios, this is the command line that worked for me:
awdflash bh6_ss.bin /cc /cd /cp /py /sn /cks /r
By the way, I now have up to 2.1v available.
Good luck!
