I need a program to test my network bandwith (LAN), that doesn't have to be installed on each machine. Sandra won't work anymore because I switched to a external DSL modem and turned of ICS.

DU Meter (http://www.dumeter.com) to monitor and pull a file across using windows file sharing.

Or you can run a small app called netcps (http://www.netchain.com/netcps/)

Yeah NetCPS is a good little proggy. I've used it in the past and its pretty accurate and easy to use.

Thanks guys, I used NetCPS. Turns out I'm only getting 1.2 MBPS to my laptop... no wonder realvnc is soooo slow.

1.2 MegaBytes per second is a fair amount of bandwidth, the thing is with VNC is that no matter your connection, is it SLOW.

Being on a lan is about as opimum as you can get for remote connection, I suggest if you are using WinXP is to use remote desktop.

I've actually used remote assitence with one of my friends and it was a little bit faster. I can't use remote desktop because the laptop is a P2 333mhz, with 64 megs of ram running 95 with a broken cd drive, busted screen. It's ok though, I just use VNC to check to see if it's still crunching SETI.

seeing as your remote seti pc's cpu is maxed, ANY remote prog will be slow.
why not use seti-spy?

I am using seti spy. I just use vnc to make the connection, I look at the progress then close it, but it's still slow if I do anything else, I can't even double click. I have to click then press enter.
