Posting this for a friend. He will be building a new system and wants to know which one would give him the most fps. Thanks in advance.

depend on the game, in q3 clock for clock they get about the same, but in d3d the amd chips are normally a few fps better, and seeing as they are cheaper they get my vote

No, the P3s with 133mhz rated bus chips perform even better.. compare to T-birds for clock for clock. They just can't beat SIMD instruction rated @ 133mhz bus. This applies to most of OGL API games

I tend to agree that the PIII is faster than a Tbird..especialy a 700E, or a 600E, o'c'ed to 1g will blow others out the door, including the PIII1g, and the P4 1.5g (according to sandra) but who knows how it will look when software is optimised to take advantage of the P4's incredible memory bandwidth, and sse2, and mmx+ instructions.
an overclocked PIII is a real smoker, if you get a good one that will allow a 300+mhz overclock
This benchmark was done at 1059mhz, not the 1087 in my sig

the chip is having less and less to do with games any way with gpu's so they are very close, rarely more than a 5% differance either way, plus the tbird is cheaper than a p3 and overclocks higher, a p3 700 costs about $150-180 and will normally overclock to about 933, for the same price you can get around a 900-1000mhz tbird that will overclock way over a gig, probabally to nearly 1.2 and that will put a 933 p3 to shame

and as for sandra. its a joke, it put my 1.08ghz celeron as faster than th 1ghz p3 when in real world apps and games it is about as fast as an 800-850mhz p3

Phil,

The P3s overclocking rate is higher than T-birds. With newer P3 chips, they can easily jump from 700mhz to over 1 Ghz. And 700E can be purchased at $125, not $150- 180. The T-birds can very hardly overclock at such high mhz i.e.. 1.1 - 1.3 ghz for example. Their weak point is its Chip OverHeating. They get too hot and being unstable is well known for T-birds and Durons. Plus, there's no question about T-birds get Beaten by P3 133mhz bus chip in many PC gaming fps. T-birds and Durons have their disadvantage and they are made of real cheap ass quality material manufacturing the chip. haha.. I luv this kind of debate. Bashing one another.. Any P3 fans agree with my thoughtful input?

yeah but you can still get a faster clocked tbird fr the same price of a p3, and they overclock well, I would like to see a p3 1 ghz go to around 1.2ghz, some do but usually need a peltier, many people are getting tbirds up to 1.4ghz and some 1.5 with just air cooling.

You're right about that part.. true true....

If intel has any sense they will stick to the mobile, corporate and budget market for a few years until they have made a good chip like amd did with it's athlon, but they still need to sort out the budget market as the duron is still cheaper which is not on considering it is almost as good as a p3 clock for clock and overclocks really well

Ok Phil you wanted proof, can you gat a 700mhz athie to do this?
All this with just an alpha...air cooling only

yeah but you are very rare, and I am sure that there are just as many rare athlons that will do that.

Thank you all for your input. I did not intend for this topic to be created in to a debate. But hey, it sure is fun watching y'all go at it:-) Little do u realize that these debates bring out supporting arguements for both Intel and Amd, and r very informative. IMHO, I find this place to be the best site for information.
