Hey guys, i played counter-strike all the way back into the beta days. I recently went and purchased a retail copy of it, updated it to 1.5. And of course, applied customer skins and sounds ect. Now here are my questions.
I currently run V1.5, i know that there is a v1.6, but requries steam, i have heard very bad things about steam, elaborate?
Is steam Free?
Do custom skins, models work in steam v1.6?
I currently play on the WON servers, how long will these remain up?
I assume there are no things that keep players honest, such as people using aim bots, wall bots ect? It seems that some of the players can get head shots with pistols at 50 yards, am i correct?
I appreciate any info!

This is the only one I can answer:
Is steam Free?
Yes.
Steam is all that is EVIL. Stay away from it. Enjoy CS as it should be in 1.5.
Of course if you like spyware, massive amounts of frustration and inadequate gaming, by all means get steam.

I got cs with my 9600xt, so the only way I can play cs is through steam. My only complaints are when I try to play HalfLife single player the load times are painfully slow between "regions" within levels. Playing CS though I haven't noticed any real problems, but I never played it pre-steam so... I guess I cant judge. I still prefer CoD or Enemy Territory though, but CS is still good for some quick addicting fun. I guess my biggest problem is the physics model is completely different from ET, so when I try to play cs I suck despite the fact that Im quite good at ET. Oh well, it isn't like I paid any money for it, and I wont need any of these games when they release HL2 :)

thanks for the input, i currently play online with WON, and use bots for offline play
steam works fine for people with patience.
it is free
custom skins work exactly as they did in 1.5 but you have to move the new skins into a different directory
how long the won servers stay up is anyones guess. originally they were supposed to be down 2 weeks after 1.6 became official
as with ever cs update they screwed the hitboxes once again. hs's are ridiculously easy. there are a few anti cheat programs out there for 1.6 i beleive.

no spyware and its not that bloated. and the pathcing works now as well.
me like 1.6 (but hate the shield)
oh and in 1.5 the aiming bullet calculation etc is like 1.5 so it aint hard to change

personally after playing halo online, steam is incredible.
Although it is down a lot, i still like a lot of the features.
First off, the friends list. It may be down a lot, but when its up its great. The main enjoyment i get out of multiplayer games is playing together with my friends. However with games like halo, this is practically impossible. With steam I can find my friends easily and join their games.
I also like the server filtering.
Back to some of the questions, I think steam is free if you have a steam id. To get that i think you need a half life cd key (or one of mods).
About hacking, there will be no way that hacking will be completely stopped.
I like the new 1.6. it is cool except for the riot shield. also the head shot area got a bit bigger, and the graffics are a bit better. one complaint with the shield it is amazing how it can stop bullets, but cannot stop a knife?
i like steam alot, much better than 1.5
just the issue about sound (as in the thread i just made) but i don't think thats a steam issue because it works for all other people:(

cool thanks! I did figure out when installing steam, you can choose to keep your orignal 1.5 directories, that way you can play LAN with bots offline until they give LAN ability without internet. I did figure out you can still use your own skins and stuff, and the graphics are a bit better with new weapons. You guys use custom weapon skins?

*BZZZ* Wrong. Steam still requires a valid Half-Life cd key to play. Which doesnt make it free ;). If you already have halflife installed steam usually takes the cd key out of the registry so you might not have seen this screen.

Wow I didn't realize that you have to get a separate cd key for each mod... on mine they're all available. This 9600xt deal is better than I thought!

You dont. Just 1 cdkey.
I just happened to choose TFC to take that screenshot at the time :p

I use steam but for CS I stick to 1.5. Though I play DOD and TFC using steam. It's kind of a resource hog and doesn't always quit when you exit it but it's OK. Definatly not the best.
I think you have to get new skins for 1.6. not sure though.

as far as programming goes, STEAM is a big steaming pile. It's slow, it's bloated, and it doesn't work half the time. There are thousands of horror stories about it....they've fixed a lot of the problems, but it is by no means perfect. Gee, you'd think the people that can create a 3D game can get a simple app (by comparison) to work properly.
As for cheating....heh, it's as big as ever. Thing is, it's MUCH easier to spot than before. You KNOW when someone has an aimbot. Wallhacks are still tough to spot if they're hiding it well.... but aimbots are nearly impossible to hide. The best I've seen is when someone was using an autosniper with aimbot....only used it while zoomed in. I could still spot it easily by the recoil being much faster than normal....but that was the most well hidden aimbot i've seen yet....Most of the time, however, it will be a n00b using it and they will toggle it on whenever an enemy is in sight....a) it snaps to the target's head (not nescessarily a headshot, however), and b) even if there's nobody in sight and its toggled on, the cursor twitches like mad. If you're specing them first person, you'd be blind not to see an aimbot.
As far as customs go....they're getting there. I don't use them, because I've heard bad stories about them getting caught by VAC (caught cheating by VAC = 5 year ban from steam). But, if you get them from sites like CSNation, you shouldn't have any problems with them.
