Real easy question here....What effects would an overheated hard drive have on perforrmance? I have been stressing my system all day today and I thought that it locked up a min ago but it is almost like it took a time out. Was wonderin when you would consider buying cooling for your hard drive?

If it's hot to the touch, then you know you need to cool it down, or when you begin to get reg errors, or the ever famous kernel32.dll error.
When hdd's get too hot, the platters want to warp, and they can "crash" into the magnetic pickup head...which is where the term "crash" came from.
these problems are almost non exisitent with modern drives, but it's better safe than out a couple of hundred clams to replace your drives...and if your drive is getting hot, you will need to vent the extra heat out of your case. Sometimes you can get better results by adding a blowhole and fan to the side of your case, and if you want, I can post a jpg of my case mod to show what I'm talking about.

A pic would be awesome! I have 2- quantum fireball 20 gig drives on RAID-0 and have been running them all day long with 3dstudio max hard. They are very hot to the touch right now. Running 300,000 faces around for 10 hours is getting to it I think. I have an Enwin Q500 case which is plenty large enough to start poppin holes in the side.
