I have a DELL P3 550 mhz and am trying to overclock the fsb to 124 mhz i use the software to overclock it and it's fine then I try to access nything like a folder and the system locks up on me why is this?
Dell Dimensios XPS T550 mhz
128mb PC100 generic sd ram
NVIDIA RIVA TNT Model 64
12.4 ghz Generic IDE Disk Type 01
What would be my best option to upgrade this comp? Would a new mobo like an ABIT for a slot 1 be a good option and if so how easy would it be to get it into my dell comp and connect all the bits and bobs up?

Anyone!
Which software were you able to use to overclock?
Thanks.

CPUCool did the job tried another one cant remember name but I am using windows ME and it didn't like it and crashed all the time.
Sounds like your HDD controller doesn't like being overclocked. Since you are changing the FSB on the fly it fails when you try a disk access, as opposed to at boot up. If you are using a 1/3 PCI divider your PCI bus is running at 41.3MHz, and that's really tough on some peripherals. Especially the cheap ones favored by most oems. If you have a 1/4 divider available in the bios it might help, but I doubt that Dell provided that capability.
You might be able to install a Promise or other after market controller for the drives and make it play.
Splendid,
Does the motherboard show up in CPUCool or did you pick another motherboard with the same PLL??
If you did just pick the PLL, did you know in advance which one to choose or did you just use trial and error.
There are others on the board with similar machines who are wondering how to overclock with CPU Cool and Soft FSB.

Try a program like CPU Cool this alters the fsb, you will ahve to enter the mobo/chip type, make ect
For my dell dimensions xps t 550 it is:
Mainboard: Intel
Mainboard type: seatle BX-2
PLL Manafacture: Cypress
PLL Type: W149
Hope this is helpfull, you may have some probs increasing the fsb as components like ram, video card, hard drive have a tendancy to lock up at higher fsb but good luck. Dell comps tend to run quite hot to so a bit of ventilation and removal of big plastic bits around the cpu may be needed.
My question is how did you figure out which main board to choose? Did you just try a bunch until it worked or did you somehow know which PLL to choose by lookin on the board or in your computer instructions.
I would like to help others who have machines from large manufacturers.

Ow right sorry missed what you were asking :( I only know that it was that PLL as I Searched hundreds of articles and started to find examples of people who had overclocked the same system I had and had used this program.
You should however be able to find out the board manafacturer from the mobo itself and then leave the board type as none, this then limits how many selections for PLL type there are. If you then use trial and error selecting the board type and then underclocking to see which ones crash your comp and which ones actually alter the fsb speed then you should get close to the PLL manafacturer or find it eventually.
The PLL type doesn't seem to matter as I can change that and overclock fine on my system, it will just show more or less fsb frequencies than your PLL will support and some will return odd results, just try them till they all seem to have some effect, which makes sence. The only other method is to serch for people who have overclocked the system you have and used programs and settings and follow their lead, sorry I can't help any more SpleNdiD
