Many "after-market" fans have been reported to CRACK flip-chips due to excessive spring retention ! I would be VERY careful on the reinstallation of the HS/FAN . As far as the chip you have , and if it "IS" cracked ; that's just to hard to say without looking at it . I wish you the best !

there was me thinking these intel chips were indidtructable, I am surprises you must have had a hell of a lot of pressure, I have an FOP which uses a lot of pressure and I have slipped and put my weight on top of it and it survived

The only way to know is to try it in a cheap mobo, like a pcchips...or whatever is cheapest. and you don't need to put it in a case, just hook up a power sup. kb and vid.and see if it boots..if it does, then put it in your real machine, and like the other person said, be very carefull adding the heatsink.
I'm wondering if maybe a little grit in the thermal compound is enough to take out an expensive PIII.
We can be comforted that the nex gen PIII's will have a nice heat transfer cap, instead of hiding the silicon under a thin layer of plastic? mylar? nail polish?
