AMD CPU dead or not???

I was running a game server that the processor fan quit on. I found a burnt trace on the back of the mb. I now have a new mb, however my question is: How do I test to see if the cpu (Atlon XP 2000) is dead without pluggin it in to the mb and firing it up?

Could I damage the new mb if the cpu is shorted? Or do they go open?

If you found a burnt trace on the BACK of the motherboard...most likely you did lose the CPU. Most 'passive cooling tests' aren't successful.
