View Full Version : 56k help
Hi everyone. I am a newbie to this forum. I was just wondering if there was anything I could do to my 56k modem to make it alot more faster. In one thread on here a guy wrote a notepad document and I did what he said and placed it in my win.ini file and it seemed to work a few times but not much anymore. Maybe it was a fluke. So can you please help me. Is there anything I can download, install, write into a folder, etc. Just anything to make it go faster. Please help. Post if you know anything.
P.S. I live too far out for a quick connection to reach.

no there isn't anything you can do that will make it "alot more faster" since the theoretcal max of a 56k dailup connection is aprox 6.6KB/s...

Yeah, not a lot that you can do...I've tried as i am still on dial up as well. :(.
Im afraid theres nothing really that can be done to improve
56k dialup.
i am on 56k and i've tried every download agent + tweaker + tweaks and nothing really makes the slightest bit of difference.
I know some people can't get broadband still but if you can get anything
faster than 56k dialup then if i were you id go get it asap, Within
price and reason of course.
I just ordered broadband last sunday, So soon i will be able to
say good bye and good ridens to dialup !!
[Edit]
You can however buy a decent external modem
and that will improve gaming pings and slightly better
your download speeds.
Im using a Diamond supra express 56e pro !!
I bought that about 2 months ago and it's the best modem
i have ever bought.
And believe me when i say i've tried about 20/30+ modems
in the past because i play games online and i sucked like
an old granny when i used to have some of the old intel pci
modems.

There is a 56K registry tweak for Win98 and XP Pro, but nothing I was able to find for XP Home. If you search long enough you'll find them.
PS: An external modem with an onboard controller will make everything but downloading close to DSL or cable. I am happy with Zoom’s v.92 serial modem.

i have to agree that an external modem would help out. i have a us robotics external 56k modem that is just fantastic. i rarely use it since my internet doesn't go out that much, but it is well worth it for when it does go out. i can set how much bandwidth i want to set to download and how much i want for upload... might want to check one out.
a good rule is whatever type of connection you have, you shouldn't skimp on the hardware, whether it be ethernet or modem connection.
I would also like to cast a vote to UsRobotics, best modem I've ever tried.
That statement about everything beings close to DSL or cable exept from download doesn't sound right to me.
What kind of DSL/Cable speed are you talking about in that case?

Well it sounds right to me... I am talking about regular DSL and Cable what else is there? I have used countless different connections. At work we have the fastest cable connection possible. Sure Cable is quicker but the only drastic difference since installing the Zoom modem is downloading. You probably have a bad 56k connection if its a lot slower when doing general surfing.
By the way binky, US Robotics and Zoom are top brands but I have heard that some people really like the Diamond supra's like M4D uses.
This was just a quick test and although its a little bit high
its still better than most 56k'ers out there can get.
On most UT server i play i get pings around 90 to 140 And anything
higher than that i dont play on because it's unplayable
as far as im conserned ...

lol, i noticed the aol by the "1 128 ms 107 ms 118 ms rt-lohtg04.proxy.aol.com [195.93.35.223]" line :)
with aol i get an average ping of 222 ms to clarity.jolt.co.uk and i am in the US. not bad for a modem :)
