with no sound playing at all, the speakers still emit this noise when the speaker volume is turned up mid to highish
logitech z-560s, anyone know why this happens?
i expect some static in the sound at high volumes, but not a whine like this. it sounds like the whine emitted from a TV when it's on...

the noise is inaudible if i just leave comp volume at max and use the speaker knob to adjust, because i never need to send the speaker volume very high.

i tried moving one of the satellites away from any electrical components, but it still gave the high pitched sound. the wire to the satellite came straight from the sub, with no components near it to interfere.

soundcard is a hercules GTXP 7.1, and i do have the latest drivers for it

could new speaker wire help this out? anyone heard of or had this problem before? thanks

Probably the wires are not shielded enough or at all and they are picking up interference from something. Try leaving the speakers on so you can hear it then start turning things off in the room first start with you monitor that is most likely the culprit. Then just keep turning things off until you don't hear the noise anymore. then whatever you just turned off is probably what is making the noise. If you turn off everything in the room except the speakers and you still hear it then sorry to tell you but you probably have either a bum set of speakers or something outside the room is sending a much stronger signal into the room. Hope you find the problem.

Both of my powered speakers do that. I don't think it's anything to worry about.

There's no magical way to get rid of hiss. It's just there. All speakers have it unless their cords are 3 inches thick with shielding.

it's not hiss, it's a whine

i told you, i expect a certain amount of static at high volumes

Yeah, that hiss is what they're talking about, believe me, I have A LOT of money invested in to my personal stereo, and I get that hiss when my amplifier is up high. It's a gentle whisper, right?

Like shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

well turn down the power to the speakers and higher on the comp,, ussually turing the volume to high will create noise since there is no comp sound being sent

ok look, sorry to get angry here but this is EXACTLY what i did not want the thread to turn into, and it's frustrating to see it happen.

i stated in my first post, and again in my second. I EXPECT HISS. I EXPECT STATIC. THIS IS NEITHER OF THOSE.

don't worry about it, i'm just gonna PM someone like james.miller and see if he knows anything...thanks

Have you got a microphone anywhere???... if so then that is your problem...

He isn't talking about feedback I don't think, but it is worth a try if you mic is close to the speakers and turned on it will cause something similar. But feedback is very distinct and gets louder quickly without turning up the volume. This high pitched whine sounds like a it's a dying PSU or Flyback in a monitor or somewhere kinda like the noise a ballast makes in the florescent lights when the ballast is about to die.

Did you check all your input connections are muted??

It can cause weird noises... ie CD Audio etc...

Unless your getting the whine even when your computers off... Then its probably your speaker set then. Unless u have a microwave close by.

thanks for the suggestions everyone

my monitor is the only thing near my speakers/control hub, and turning it off did not help. there's no other electronics near em.

moving the satellites out into the room by themselves didn't help either

nor did moving the sub

i also muted all of the line ins, good suggestion, thanks, didn't work though

one interesting thing: when i muted the computer and turned the volume all the way up, the static/hiss went away, but this whine stayed there. that was interesting...
don't know what it means though

the strange thing is that it comes out of every satellite equally. it's not as if one satellite is defective, or one satellite is picking up some kind of interference

Quick idea, try switching the power strip you're using. You might have noise in your power lines. I generally find that if I turn the PC sound volume to midway and the speaker volume to the needed volume I get the least amount of noise too. Moderate PC signal noise and moderate hiss from the speakers, also mute all inputs/outputs you don't need. For whatever reason, they add to the noise. I have the 560's too, by the way. I've never experienced the whining you describe, and I've used multiple PSUs, mobos with integrated audio and different sound cards. I'd check the powerstrip, since it's the only thing that might be doing it, or if you can, use a different outlet for the speakers entirely.

The power strip worked for a friend of mine that had a crazy hiss. Turn up all your volumes on the computer and just run the speakers volume at lower settings.

hey, unique solution, thanks. i got a new powerstrip for christmas too, but i haven't put it in. i'll let you know how it goes
