View Full Version : Frequent R&R of cpu problem...
I recall a post a while ago where someone found that, after removing and the later re-installing his cpu, it wouldn't run at the provious overclock speed he'd been getting.
I recall the answer was to the effect; "Sometimes when removing the cpu, youdon't get the same connection when reinstalling, and it won't overclock the same as before." Had to do with with the way the pins in the slot and contacts on the cpu "bond" together over time, or something like that.
I seem to be suffering from this problem with my Celeron, after pulling it and playing w/ my P/// 600E and Celeron 300A for a while. The 600 Celley only will run at 1020 MHz, at 2.0v, and not entirely 100% stable there, either.
My question is, does this phoenominia (sp?) dissapear after running for a while or should I pull the chip and try to reinsert it in the cpu slot, hoping for a "better contact"??
I think Tim had the answer for the last post on this topic, but don't think he mentioned if it "fixes" itself over time.
Thanks!

If what you are saying is happening then I think I know the answer. I am a ASE master auto tech and I do a lot of computer diagnosis. I find most (weird electrical problems ) as bad connections. One way I have found to fix these problems is with a liquid called Contact Enhancer, which you can buy at your local Car Quest store. I can tell you the part number if you are interested but I warn you it's not cheap. My good friend who works for Raytheon as a missile tech, uses a similar product.
It may or may not depending on corrosion present, etc. The best compound for curing this type of problem is called Deox-it by Caig labs. You can find it with a search easy enough. It's the best of the lot, and the choice of Nasa and Boeing, etc. If you spray your flashlight batteries it will get brighter! It too is expensive, but the object is to use the lightest application possible so it goes a long way. A 5oz spray can is typically $15 or so as I recall.
Thanks for the replies! Sounds like the effect can be reversed, then.
Well, I just spent a "C" note on a new 3D Prophet II MX vid card, so...I guess I'll be running at 1020 for a week or two. At least I know what I need to look for.
BTW...nice quote, Tim. The Coz has long been a fav of mine. My Mom has somewhere tucked away, his first 7 record albums of stand-up he did back in the 60's. I was quoting the old "Noah" skit to my wife one night, and wound up getting the cd (they've been re-released on cd) so she could hear the whole 3 part masterpeice.

This is weird. I just sprayed Caig's DeOxit Gold on the connections of my DIMM's today. Didn't help but I really didn't know if it was advisable.
I was hoping that a better connection might help me reach higher speeds. It did not. I wasn't having a problem.
Great stuff- it certainly won't hurt. You can be assured the DIMM connections will be good for a long time, now.
The Coz has always been ok with me. His take on fatherhood always seemed right on the mark.

Mr B, I would do the r&r trick first, it is the cheapest of the solutions, and might help...Also I noticed you said you bought a new vid card...did you try the cpu with the old card? first? this could be the prob....I have never had that kind of prob before, with mine, if it ain't in right, it don't boot, the only thing I had to do was clear the cmos when changing the cpu's..and I tried 5 different cpu's in this mobo, and they all ran as expected, or better..but I might just pick up some of that precious liquid.

No, I've been fighting it for two or three days now (I got the card today).....I was kind of hoping a bit of "burning" might solve it, and get me back to where I was.
*dumb, sheepish grin*
When it didn't, I posted the above. I'll try pulling it out and re-inserting it tonight...gotta go to work for now.
Thanks again!
