View Full Version : Why is my P3 so hot?

I have a P3 800EB not oc'ed now due to too high of temps. My board temp at idle is around 27, overclocked or not. When I first put this together my processor would run at 30C at idle. I overclocked it every once in a while but I never wanted to do it much because the temps where always higher than I liked. I left it running over night one night overclocked and since then my cpu temp never falls below 35C. Where did the 5C go? I even changed heatsinks from one ****ty square one to a chrome orb that I got from a friend brand new for 5 bucks. We got ours from the same place, looks like the same thing but a different shape. Now when I put my buss up to 150 my cpu temp at idle is 43C, 57C under load! This is with 1.7 voltage. I got artic silver comming in the mail and maybe an alpha pretty soon too but my temps right now seem way too high for what I got for cooling I have now.

Hi, I've the same Cpu (not O/Cked) with a TT Golden Orb and his temperatures are 42-43c at full load, 32 idle, Mobo always 27.
Have you mounted Chrome Orb right?
I ask you coz you temps are really high! and I made the same err ;-)
Put just a thin film of Artic Silver, too much isolate thermal transfer, and monitor your temps with MBM (MotherBoardMonitor).
Good Luck

My temps were the same as yours for a while. The orb came with thermal compound pre-applied (which sucks I know). As far as mounting the heatsink goes, I've heard you guys talk about them being not mounted correctly but it's a simple clip. The heatsink is on flush and not moving at all. How could it be on wrong?

My inlaw's have a 800EB system (not OC'ed) with temps above 50C under load, I was also wondering about that, checked everything found no cause and the system is stable!? I checked the Intel site and this chip can take 80C(!) It's strange though...

If its your inlaws then I'm guessing this is an OEM system, not one you or anyone else made. I wouldn't be surprised if there temps are due to poor case cooling and the stock heatsink. I was shocked to see the lack cooling in my friends cele 667 compaq which had only one case fan which was in the power supply. Mine on the otherhand has pretty good case cooling 27C pretty constant with outside air comming in right on the processor. Maybe the chip just runs hot, I don't know.

Yes, it's a OEM system with a crap HSF and the only casefan is in the PSU. They also teamed up the 800EB with a TNT2-M64 3D-decellerator. Fortunatly it's a real clone-PC (not an a-brand) so the window is open for a few future upgrades...

I had a 600e for about a year. It has a crap heatsink made out of metal. It would overclock like mad, but heat up even at normal speed. Idle temps would be over 30 `C and under load over 50īC. (100fsb)
Yesterday I picked up an 800e, and the heatsink is made out of aluminium. It doesīnt go over 28īc under full load @920mhz... I took the dust of the 600e, and put it back to try, and temps had gone down by 13īc! It seems the heatsink was so covered by dust, that it couldīnt cool it down!!

Being new to O/Cing, i read the begining guides on your main page (and all the other manuals they tell us to read) and decided to make a first step with the smalest O/Cing I could do.

But I still had one question in mind before trying : What value should I put has a temp treashold for my CPU. Mainly, my system is a P3 500mhz on a Asus P3B-F mobo. The temp treashold in the probing software that comes with the mobo is set at a default value of 90C while the CPU runs at a constant 60C no matter the load (mbm confirms that temp) !! With temps that high compared to all thoses you stated in this tread, I'm starting to think I should go Underclocking instead of O/Cing since I don't want to invest in any cooling system for the moment.

Anyone who has/had a similar system, please tell me if these numbers are normal and if I can safely raise them a bit. Btw, my mb temps is at a constant 27C. Thanks all,

I have the very same chip my friend

Even at stock settings the temp is 40 tick over 57 full tilt, I have a large cooler with case cooling too.

Running at 166 (giving me a gig :) ) The temps are 42 tick over 59 full tilt.

Iam going to try some silver to get the temp down a bit. But Iam not that worried about it as Intel say you can run at 70/80.

i have the same chip
but slot 1

this thing is bad
just below 60C when under full load(SETI@HOME)
and around 30-40 idle temp with around 5 programs running in systray

Well, I've got a 550e slot1 on an Abit BE6-2 with a crappy(?) Vantec P3D-6530 fan h/s combo and at 733 it's always at around 37-39c. Does that seem right? Its the same as with the retail h/s. Go figure......
