The windows 98 computer is connected to the internet. I want that computer to share the connection w/ everything else... is that what a proxy server is? yes?

Yeah but you need Proxy Server Software. Windows 98SE has it built in, but you have to install some extra pieces for it to work. Go to add/remove programs, select the windows components tab. When it opens find the selection with ICS put a check in there and it should set everything up.

I dont think ICS is a DHCP server I believe you need to set them with static IPs, and check to see if the current IP addresses for both machines are 169.254.X.X that indicates they are not pulling the information from a DHCP server. Also set your 98SE machine as your default gateway in your WinXP machine, ex: IP: 192.168.0.100, subnet mask: 255.255.255.0, gateway: 192.168.0.1. Where 192.168.0.1 is the ip address of your win98SE machine.

Also look into either installing XP/2k on this machine to use NAT/ICS. Or install linux on this machine and use it as a NAT/firewall if you really wanna learn something. Or just spring for it and get a router :)

Thanks, I'll mess around w/ it more. I know the 98SE machine is not 169.xxx... I'm unsure if you can run direcPC w/ just a router. And I don't think they support linux...

Ok, which ip goes where? On the 98SE I have "TCP/IP (Shared) -> satalite reciever USB device", "TCP/IP -> dial-up adapter", "TCP/IP -> Internet connection sharing", and finally "TCP/IP -> SiS 900 PCI Fast eithernet adapter". The satalite internet will stop working if I change the USB device from obtain automaticly. The dial-up I shouldn't need to change. The ICS is set to 10.20.10.198, should I change it to 169.254.x.x? And the Ethernet adpater I have already changed to 192.168.0.1. Is this right?

Then in XP change the default gateway to the 192.168 one? and the regular IP to 169.254? Yes or no?

Thanks again.
