ok, now that youre reading this, maybe you can help me answer a few simple questions (yet unimaginably complicated to me aah!)

firstly..i just purchased a celeron 400 just the plain old celeron, and i put it in my new asus cubx motherboard with another 192 megs od sdram pc 100

now...earlier today, i tried changing the bus speed from 66 to 83 and it clocked it to 500 ok..it got into windows..and everything was ok...the assus pc probe automatically lowered the temp threshold and i noticed between 1 to 5 degrees celsuius temp increase.

the problem is once the computer froze, i couldnt get into windows...which was because some file was missing (go figure...i dunno how..but it fixed by now...good old format command)

now i cant figure out what i should do to have it run stably at 500
i have just a regular fan that comes with it and the heatsink..and the side of my case is always open to allow fresh air, and easy smashing of hardware when its not working kind of access...

so if you can help me figure out what the voltage should be (right now at default of 2.0) or bus speeds, or anything else, then please reply to this msg!

Thanks in advance!

Vlado

At a FSB of 83, it is quite possable that your harddrive went corrupt. Thats bad, as you may need to format the drive and do a fresh install.

It is also possable that your CPU will not do the 600MHz it needs to do in order to hit a *safe* PCI clock, simply because it is too close to the maximum obtainable speed for .25micron CPUs. But first off lets see if it can go 600MHz. Raise the Vcore by about 10%. And use the best darned cooling you have. Then see what kind of an OC you get.

If you find that the chip can not run at 600MHz:
My advise is to find out if your motherboard can support the .18micron Celeron2's, and if it can, go buy a $60 Celeron2 600.

From 1 newbie to another. What Jeff said! Also you may want to check the temps with your case closed, maybe add a case fan and use some thermal grease. Arctic Silver is the best, but any grease is at least twice as good as nothing. There are lots of excellent tips accessable from the home page of this site. Good luck!

1: I agree that your hdd got hosed when at 83mhz...a lot of drives do not like 83mhz, and the other gentleman was right, in if you had better cooling, and clocked it to the 100mhz bus, all your device will be in spec, and thus more stable...but you won't be able to accomplish it with the stock h.s., and the "frag tape" they use between the cpu and h.s. is a joke. Buy a better h.s./fan, and if you can't do 83, or 100, try for the next best thing..75.
But bottom line, 600mhz is a better target, but might be unreachable with that chip.
I was wondering if you lower the pio mode of the hdd, you might get away with the 500mhz, but you will suffer a performance hit, and I'm not sure it's worth the trade off.

sweet! thanks for the info guys!

i'm planning on getting a new drive anyways..so anything that's less than a year old (model-wise) should be ok right? when overclocking that is?
and also..i noticed some poeple complaining about frying their video cards (agp) when overclocking their cpu...are they tied in any way?

i know two instances where the asus banshee got fried..and one of those cases was where the card burst on fire...and caught the rest of the computer in flames too lol

anyways..let me know what u think :P

Yes, I have heard of such problems with hard drives not liking the 83 mhz bus.

I have a maxtor hd, apparently, very prone to problems with such bus speeds. I would say, once every 3 months or so, it crashes, and when i reboot it says, "hdd failure etc etc". I just unplug it from the case, plug it back in, and everything works fine. I have never had such corruption, that windows would not load. It hasnt been a problem at this point.

The proble is, the Celeron 400ppga is not going to reach 600 mhz..unless your extremely lucky. I have been running mine at 500, with the 83 bus, since I bought it a few years ago. Im kinda hoping, that my 600 I bought from ebay, will do a 100mhz fsb, but we will have to wait and see. If it wont, well..we will be none to pleased.
