Can someone please explain to me the purpose of "burning in" a chip and how long it should be done? As a newbie I'm not really too clear on the concept at this point. Thanks!

I don't really know why burning in works, or how it works, but it does.
some of the programs you should look for are prime95, seti@home, sisoft sandra, and 3d mark 2000. as far as how long... only you will know. some chips take a good chunk of time, some only need a few hours.
the way that I did my burn-in was, run prime95, seti, and 3dmark all at once for about 6 hours (overnight) then when i woke up, restarted the computer trying a higher fsb and/or raising the voltage. a quick tip is to go slow, don't pump the chip to the highest volt.
here is what you do, burn in at the highest speed you can, after done burning in try for a higher speed, and then when it doesn't want to go any farther go back 1 step and burn-in some more.
as always check your temps.

there are several opinions on burning-in, I read this http://people.freenet.de/s.urfer/conditioning.htm and set my celeron 600 to 600 with 2v and ran prime95, seti, sandra etc.. for a few months, after that I can run my cCO 600 at 750 with only 1.3v, I haven't gotten round to checking how low I can set the voltage at 900 but I would guess it was lower than the standard 1.7v, also it let me run at 1.01ghz with 1.9v which I could not do before
