I am not familiar with the heatsink on the P3 800E but on the P3 550 the heatsink is held to the slot 1 board via two plastic H shaped retainers, each with two prongs sticking through the main board and into the back Pentium casing through 4 holes, is this the same on your's?
The easiest way to remove this is to get a small pair of pliers and gently twist and break the four plastic retainer legs leaving only a small bit of plastic sticking through the circuit board and the back casing. These can then be pulled and twisted out leaving it ready to have a new heatsink and fan unit fitted. Be carefull not to aply to much force and not to damage any of the components when breaking the placstic retainers. Hope this helps

If yours is mounted the same way as my 600E (I'm assuming you are referring to the intel heatsink and fan assembly), Skip posted a tip on the removal of these using a case screw. This can be found on the "home" page here, in the "Tips" list on the left, in the CPU tips.
Scroll down the list for the entry for "Removing P/// heatsink/fans" The beauty of this method is it doesn't damage the retainers if done correctly (it's an incredibly easy procedure), therefore, if you ever wanted to re-install the intel unit for resale, you can.
I got rid on the intel hsf on my P/// yesterday, for an Alpha P3125 w/ a pair of YS Tech fans. I shaved 15 degrees celcius from my loaded cpu temp just by changing the hsf.
Enjoy!

So Mr. B, how do you like your new Alpha?..I'm still amazed at the difference in mine...I mean I have a chip running @ 1087, and idles at 23c and maybe goes to 26-27 playing games.
I have never tried any globalwins except rof the h.s/fan that came with my celeron 300a, but I still have to say I haven't seen anything that compares to an Alpha.
Doc, I LOVE IT !!!!
Immediately knocked 15c off of the loaded temp, and I was in such a rush to install it, I didn't even take the time to lap the bugger.
I had the Soyo (6BA+III) hardware monitor set to go off at 50c, and it hit that one time, with the intel hsf. After I put the Alpha on, I burned it for a bit with Prime95 torture test. Temp only got up to 32.5c. And this is with the YS Tech 60x60x25 fans that move like 27 cfm. I'm looking to get a pair of Delta 38 cfm's for it. Noise is not a concern.
I'm going to swap out mb's again, and put the Asus P3C2000 back in, as it will let me set the vcore up to 1.9v. The Soyo maxes out at 1.81.
I'm only getting to about 825ish stable on the Soyo, and I had the P/// post at 936 MHz on the Asus. The temp shot up to around 50c doing 936 really quick, so I never got out of the BIOS, I shut it down right then and there.
I'm hoping tomorrow morning I can do the swap....might start tonight after the wife goes to bed. we'll see..........
Yes, the Alpha was worth EVERY penny I spent on it, and the two week wait for shipping from British Columbia to Boston. Can't praise this hsf highly enough.
