how much weight can i hang off the chip itself?

or in other words;

if i simply took a cooljag 1u and epoxied it to a 9800noshim/5900nohtspdr, without any screws, it'll hold right?

as in if i don't move it much, it won't just crack the chip and catch on fire right?

thanks for the time

the 5900:

(no heatspreader)

and the heatspreader: http://www.theforumisdown.com/uploadfiles/1203/Bottom.jpg

and also a 9800pro that doesn't have a shim

anyone?

It should beable to take the weight, but if something knocks against it (arm, accidently drop it, or something) all the force will be placed in the chip rather then the mounting helping to absorb the force of the impact. Also theres no pressure to make a firm contact with the chip so heat transfer would be reduced though with epoxy this might not be as much of an issue as long as sufficent force is applied when the glue dries.

If you were to use a U1 cooler drill some holes to mount it to the board, those things aren't that light. ANd you don't wanna risk taking your core off when moving to a LAN.

so you mean i still need them screws and springs and so on?

i'll take the first two replies (thanks) as that maybe its not a good idea to just use glue

so there is no one out there who is *just* using glue instead of screws or zip ties or what have them?

thanks for the time

I think you should definately use screws, just to be safe and not killa $400 card. 20 cents in screws saves a $400 card.
