Why did my Radeon 32MB DDr just die for no reason?

I don't know what happened! I put it back in my computer and went into windows, then started crapping all over itself with lines n crap all over. I checked powerstrip to make sure it wasn't o/c and it wasn't.
Then i restarted, goin to reinstall win98 from win2k, and it even did it in dos!!! I put my voodoo3 back in to make sure it wasn't the motherboard, and it worked fine. I put the radeon back in, and still same lines. When i play games the lines don't show up tho. I tried lowering the i/o voltage still no help.

I will take a screenshot soon and show you what it does.

All i know is that i am really pissed because i spent 200 dollars on this card a while ago and now it is crapping all over itself!!!

Is it still under guarantee if it is send it back, one thing you might try though is to clean the edge connectors, either a pencil erasor that won't leave a rubbery residue or some alchahol, for example nail polish remover as you may have something on one or two of the connectors

Hmmmmm....this kinda sounds like what was going on with my Riva TNT2 AGP card. I'll have to try that eraser idea out.

I tried the card on 4 different mb's and just gave up on it....put it back in the box, and in the closet it went. I'd love to get it to work, as I'm going to start putting together a 2nd rig soon.

If the eraser trick doesn't work Phil, you mentioned nail polish remover. Would rubbing alchol suffice?? I happen to have the bottle still sitting here, from cleaning the die on my P/// when I put the Alpha on Thurs. night. Been to lazy to put it back in the bathroom....hehehe

no,i haven't used my p3 450 in a week or so....i only used 3.9v i/o for about 1 hour or less. I didn't do anything, i had the i/o to 3.2v and worked fine then all the sudden lines n crap. I am really upset!

I would send it back to ati, i did send in the warentee card for 5 years, but the only thing is, i don't think they will take it back, as i changed the heatsink. If i put the original heatsink back on and send it do you think they will notice?

for the rubbing alchohol question, it might work, but acetone(nail polish remover) is a much better solvent and will probably work better. But, either one will work and will not damage the PCB

For what did i do to it, i had it sitting on top of my chasis without a static bag....maybe thats what it was? I dunno but, i have decided to send it back since i have 4 of 5 years on my warentee left, and take everything i put on off. I am going to say the sink on the gpu (came with it) came off and i didn't notice and i started getting lines.

What are they gonna do? Say you can't have another card even tho you still have 4 more years of your warentee?

A radeon set at AGP2x would have to withstand 3.9v - ah ah - bye bye Radeon.

This is where AGP 4x motherboards with independant 1.5v +/- setting are a real plus.

I would not dream of putting this kinda voiltage through a video card. If you RMA it to ATi - they'll probably see this straight away.
