View Full Version : PIII 450 with 512K cache trouble overclocking it
I don't seem to be able to change the multiplier system just doesn't acknowledge the change. 5 x 112 reads 504 in bios boot up.
I am assuming that the chip is multiplier locked but I don't know, can some one shed some light on this as I would like more Mhz than 504
also if I try to put it up to say 133 FSB I get a windows panic but when I read the CPU data base some have it clocked at 144 fsb.
Lucky Star Motherboard supports FSB stepping of 103, 112 and 133
128Mb of PC-133 SDRAM CAS 2-2-2
Voodoo 3 3000 AGP GFX
the katmai core was not very good for overclocking, have you tryed increasing the voltage at all? I woujld say unless you have any other fsb options or increasing the voltage helps with the 133mhz fsb the 504 is gonna be your limit as you are right that the multiplyer is locked as intel locks the multiplyer on all chips since the 333 or so
No I haven't touched the voltage but at least I have a direction to look at guess I best start learning about this unheard of motherboard.
Do you think it would be worth investing in a different motherboard or is the katmai core that bad ?

get a new chip, the 450 is pretty bad, compared to the newer stuff. Mine does 617 @ 2.3v. I am willing to sell it if you are interested. Also a good overclocking motherboard is really good. I would say, get the motherboard first, then the chip. Make sure you have good ram to get to 133fsb+.

Why don't you download either cpucool, or softfsb, both are utilities that move up your frontside bus, and allow some degree of overclocking..I think you should get 558mhz out of that chip, but you will have to be able to set it at 124mhz fsb.
I have a freind with a 450PIII, and his does 639mhz, I got the same batch/date/s-spec, and mine will only do 590something, and only under protest...558stable
Cpucool, or softfsb will help you reach computer nirvana
Thanks for the help guys I will post and let you know how I get on.
Thanks for the offer of the PIII but I bought this system for £150 as a stop gap due to my aging K6-2 500 @ 550 which is now my router. Hope to have enough cash for a dual athlon system when they come out. Luckily this system with the v3 is enough to pump MBTR at 39.9fps at 1024/768 it might just last the distance if I can squeeze it enough ;)
you are best off keeping that system running at 504mhz for a while until it is out if date, maybe buying a geforce card of some sort, it's not worth going to the expense of a new board considering slot 1 is dead.
