Hi all, i've been lurking for quite a while but never felt i had anything to contribute.

I am at my wit's end though with a sound card problem, and I thought this would be the perfect place to find some help / someone that shares the problem.

First off, i'm using windows XP home edition (i know, i know...I only use this machine because my 2000 one has a crappy mobo). This box is a gateway 2000 packaged set (again, i know...this really isnt my actual machine, mine is homebuilt :D)

I just got a sound blaster audigy LS sound card, since my 16 bit one was, well, 16 bit. I installed it, hooked my speakers up, hooked up the cd rom aux cable, and powered up my PC, everything looked cool. I then installed the creative drivers onto my machine.....and then something went wrong i suppose. Basically my problem is i am not, nor was i ever, getting sound out of my speakers now.

My old 16 bit sound card was working great, and i changed nothing around. I just uninstalled the old card, powered down the pc, popped it out, put the new card in, powered it up and installed the drivers.

First off, i tried uninstalling the drivers, which hung my system. With thoughts of "screw microsoft" floating in my brain, i just installed the creative drivers over the preexisting ones for my old sound blaster live! value. I realized right away i shouldnt have done that, since i had destroyed my system before via windows crappy driver skills. I just now finished reformatted my HDD (had plenty of viruses anyways, and i felt like reformatting), reinstalling windows, and setting everything back up. I installed the creative drivers from the CD (theres no updates or different drivers on the site), checked all sound levels, made sure nothing was muted, checked all the device manager settings, no conflicts, no bad drivers, no disabled devices; my sound card's current settings are PERFECT, except for of course i'm getting no sound.

I checked and made sure that everything was plugged in correctly, everything was on, all sound levels are audible...basically i've done all i can do, and for a lowly A+ tech that isnt all that much.

Soooooooooooo, if theres anyone that wasnt put to sleep by my long winded post, I'd love to hear of any similar stories, or possible things i might have overlooked, anything. Thanks a lot :)

Of course the sound card could always be bad, I dont know that either.

Hey,
What kind of speakers do you have, and how are they connected?

Ah, i knew i forgot something. I have Boston Acoustics BA735 2.1 speakers, and they have an analog connector, which i have plugged into the L1 out on my sound card.

What a coincidence, I have the very same ones on my old Gateway 600mhz. It had a Soundblaster Live! Value (gone 'cos I fried it accidentally  ), and I always had them connected to the front speakers jack using the Digital cable that came with them. In fact, I don't ever recall using the analogue cable for connecting them to the PC, except for connecting a CD player or tape player etc.

Why don't you use the digital cable? Connect them to the front speakers jack, and go to Surround Mixer and make sure digital output is enabled. That should work. Although the analogue cable one should work aswell, unless you have digital output enabled when you shouldn't.

Hee hee, we often look for a more complicated solution, it's usually something simple.:D

Did you not wonder what the other cable was for?

Glad i could help.
