i think it's just a matter of, if you feel comfortable with your temp at 42, 42 isin't that hot, you might think about getting a better heatsink/fan or peltier, for me personally, i would just leave it at that, but then again i am incredibly, incredibly lazy......
If you stay in that temperature range you should not have any problems. Usually 45c or below is adequate to maintain stability without problems. You may find that the addition of a case fan or two will improve those temps by a few degrees. If opening the case causes the temps to go down, then increased airflow through the case is desirable.
42 isn't too, too bad, but I would slap a new heatsink on it. I personally use Motherboard Monitor 5. It monitors both my cpu's, and my case temp. Doesn't eat up to much memory. If you want it just do a search on the web and you should find it.
well i got one slot exhaust fan , i think i will get a 300 watt power suply before i do anything else , then i will go to a alpha p3125 heatsink and try a little bit more fsb, do u think a little more ram would help i am running muskin rev 3 128 megs right now with a hercules gts be62 r2 motherboard .
I like to keep my temps below 40 degrees for long time usage. If you have the common style slot fan, those are really not powerful enough to be used by themselves. I use one mainly to exhaust hot air from around my video card, which is about all it's good for. But, I have a couple other exhaust fans in my case too, including a 60mm fan right behind the CPU.
If you don't already have a 80mm front case fan blowing in fresh air, that is a top priority. Heat is the enemy of overclockers. Reroute your wires and cables inside the case too. Lots of cheap things to improve air flow. A better CPU cooler and thermal paste should show better results too.
More RAM will not let you overclock any better. Faster RAM might, but you already have excellent Mushkin RAM.
I think it depends on what software or games you play and on your chip. For me when my temps are 29.5c or lower, Everything is fine. But if my temps touch the 30c's UT wont start up. it either gives me an error or locks the system up. But I think mine has something to do with psu going bad. But it just shows how a few degrees c can make a difference.
