Does the computer actually recive data to crunch or is it just bogus calculations to make your CPU heat up your cold room.

What are you basing your question on, if I may ask? I have never come across any statements implying that one of the oldest Distributed Computing Projects, was somehow a bogus attempt to make people look foolish.
I can't look at a WU's contents and say positively that it is genuine scientific data, but a project this large and with this many people involved would certainly have a difficult time surviving if it was merely a cruel joke.

This has been going on since the 60's before desktops so i really don't think they were thinking on the lines you stated.
some reading for you:http://setiathome2.ssl.berkeley.edu/about_seti/about_seti_at_home_1.html

I didn't say it was a joke!
I don't feel like readin their website word for word. I just want to know if their is acually radio data being sent to our computers or is non-sence data calculations.
Hmmm...well I guess what I saying is it really some thing being recived from a radio relay or are they just tring to amass a certain amound of processing power for an alternate purpose?
BTW The neet little graphic...is that just a screen saver like thing or is it a true represntation of what the computer is analysing?

heres a quicker summary of whats going on:

The background picture in my stat counter is a graphical version as to what it is calculating.

So the grahic is what your PC is working on?
BTW Where did you get that stat counter?
Yes, the graphic is a representation of what your system is working on..however, don't use the GUI, use the CLI.

That is a much faster version of it. It doesnt spend time trying to render the GUI.

Where do find the different versions of the program? I only rember seeing 1 DL link.

This is the screensaver version which shows the fancy graphics:
http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/windows.html
This is the page with the faster CLC version without the nice Graphics:
http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/unix.html
It's gives a complete list of systems it supports but for windows users you download the one that says: i386-winnt-cmdline.exe:
All this info is included at the top of the section in the sticky.
When using the CLC version you need a caching program such as SETIdriver. Use the link above that Agent_Mull provided. It's a quicker install that i whipped up a while back.
Well, I'd be inclined to believe it's real data since:
1) A lot of people would get REALLY mad at berkely for having us work for nothing :D
2) They're sponsored by lots of groups, including space related ones
3) They have an antenna up at Arecibo for goodness sake! :)
If you're interested in participating, the sticky BurningPheonix mentioned should be of help. :)

Oh, well I've already done 6 units of work since I started this thread.
I like the screen saver version...I'm a treky...and it looks like a star trek thing, so I kinda like it.
I don't know if this data is really for SETI though...their are so many things you can do with a relay station. One is useing it like a radar to find asteroids and stuff like that. You know to see if their going to colide with the earth or something.
All in all I think I'll keep this running on my PC, curiosity killed the cat right? Last time I checked I wasn't a cat...so all should be good....
....right?

....right? Kinda like you, I ran the screen savor on my pc's for several months till I found out about seti driver and seti spy. Seti spy is a very cool add-on to the client. The client version will complete work units twice as fast or faster and gives you more data quicker so you can view what you are doing and what you have done using seti spy.
Here is the link for the complete instructions and dl's to what you need for the command line client and seti spy. http://www.ocsetiteam.com/other/Instr1.htm
If you havn't joined the team and would like to be a part of us, you can join us here> http://setiathome2.ssl.berkeley.edu/fcgi-bin/fcgi?cmd=team_join_form&id=94265
You will need to get your password from Berkley to join. It has a link on that page to get your pw sent to you by email.

Sounds intwesting....indeed.
I'll look into the team thing...Do I still keep my stats if I join the team?
BTW it takes me only an average of 4 hrs. per work unit.

BTW it takes me only an average of 4 hrs. per work unit. Your work units are yours, wherever you go or do with you user name.
4 hours is pretty darn quick with the gui version. You must have your system pretty much optomized or crunching some really high AR work units. The average with your system running the clc should be just over 2hrs/wu. You are not able to optomized your system with the gui also. The client will allow you to run 2 instances of seti with your setup. If you have ht enabled. That should get you 2+ wu's every 4 hours:cool:

That link is dead!

The link to join the Team is functional and correct, it's just that Berkeley's servers are sometimes a little slow on the uptake. Sometimes it takes a few attempts before getting connected to where you want to go.
