I think i have the right mbo, Abit BE6-ll, (slot 1), from what i'm reading here I want to get a P3-700 cpu. My question is, do want a slot 1 or flip chip. I have an Iwill slocket ll adapter, so either will work, but which one is the best overclocker?
FC-PGA "flip-chip", here's why....
If you get a slot one chip, you will be limited to what voltage adjusments the mother board offers. If you opt for the s370 (flip chip), you can have an infinite (well, virtually) number of settings. If memory serves, the BE6 II allows 2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10 % over volting of default. For a cC0 700 (1.7v default), this allows 1.7, 1.75, 1.79, 1.83, and 1.87v settings. If you get a s370 chip, and mount it in that slocket, and set the voltage settings for 1.9v, you can then ALSO adjust in the BIOS, as well (1.9, 1.95, 2, 2.05, 2.1v).
More versitility. With the slocket, the s370 chip can be used in either a slot or socket motherboard.

get the flipchip, the heatsinks cost less, you can upgrade your mobo later, like was already said, the whole voltage thing.

get flip chip
a loser(me) first thought slot 1 was better and made the mistake of buying one...the hs/f cost so much at where i m at now so i m screwed and i used the money for the hs/f on something else

Boris,
You got a good one there!
I'd still have to go with the flip chip, if the option was there. They're just more versitile. You can set it up on a s370 mn, or a slot 1 with a slocket. With a slocket, you have a lot more options for vcore adjustment. The hsf's are a bit cheaper, as mentioned above, as well.
If they were all guarranteed to run as well as yours, I'd get a slot 1 chip too.......
Nice chip!

You cannot put an Alpha P3-125 on a flipchip...and it is true that you get a lot more voltage adjustments with a slotkett..however with the cCO steppings, and the cDO coming soon, I see no real reason to use any more than 1.9v....my slot one 700E will do 1050 @ 1.65v....default is 1.7v.....like I said b4, buy only a pretested cpu, or get retail boxed, if you get an oem, you are taking your chances
also by setting the voltage on the slocket you make sure that the chip boots up with that voltage as some boards only set the voltage during the post which can stop some overclocks posting if you need a certain amount of voltage to post

Interesting... i have an OEM PIII 650@1G and a RETAIL PIII 700@933. both were tested in the same equipment for verification. i bought the 700 just to try not to beat everything down so bad with FSB. i expected the retail to do better. oem/retail either way you are taking your chances.

True enough, but you can use a PEP66. I've had a good experience with that on my CII 600.
I'll agree on the cC0/cD0 needing less voltage, and I'd love to see what yours does fully maxed out. My cB0 P/// 600E needs a bit more, though. The Asus mb I'm using now lets me run up to 1.95v, which is as far as I'd want to go with this chip anyways. My Soyo 6BA+III only allowed up to 1.81v, which is why I changed mb's again this past weekend. Well, that, plus the 4x AGP support for my new 3D Prophet II MX.
There's no real "right or wrong" on this one. Deciding on which chip (slot1/s370) to get will more depend on what your hardware is now, and where your upgrade path leads.

Thanks for the info guys, i have decided on a flip chip, i have a new boxed retail celleron ll 600 with cco stepping, in case I'm not happy with the results with the P3 700. Pehaps one of these chips will get me to the majic 1 gig, hopefully with the ord, exhaust fan and extra case cooler I already have, if not I'll be looking for a better cooler . Thanks Again. Any extra advise will be appreciated when the new 700 arrives,
Abit BE6ll
384 megs Micron 133
P.S. I was successful with my first overclocking last nite with my P2 450, took it to 550, going to shoot for 600 tonite!!!
