OMEGA observed the southern polar cap of Mars on 18 January 2004, as seen on all three bands. The right one represents the visible image, the middle one the CO2 (carbon dioxide) ice and the left one the H2O (water) ice.

Too bad the $400 million Spirit rover is seeing nothing but a BSOD

Looks like they got it back up transmitting data. BTW you might want to check the forum rules - links in your sig are not allowed.

EDIT:
Updated Mars Exploration Rover Mission Status
January 23, 2004
The flight team for NASA's Spirit received data from the rover in a communication session that began at 13:26 Universal Time (5:26 a.m. PST) and lasted 20 minutes at a data rate of 120 bits per second.
"The spacecraft sent limited data in a proper response to a ground command, and we're planning for commanding further communication sessions later today," said Mars Exploration Rover Project Manager Pete Theisinger at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif.
The flight team at JPL had sent a command to Spirit at 13:02 Universal Time (5:02 PST) via the NASA Deep Space Network antenna complex near Madrid, Spain, telling Spirit to begin transmitting.
check out the transfer rate!
Debugging a BSODing machine billions of miles away :D Dosen't that just sound like any tech's worst nightmare?
I hope Spirit gets back to normal. It'd be a shame to have an early loss of yet ANOTHER mars lander :(

Their ram could be the problem. They should take it out and reseat it in a different slot. If that doesn't work, then they should only try one stick at a time. And when in doubt, they should hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and shut down any processes they don't need.
:p
Seriously, sounds like they have things pretty well under control. I'm not too worried.
This is one of those situations where overclocking just doesn't pay. I wonder if spirit can lock the agp/pci bus .... ;)

I heard they had 2-3 instances on teh pathfinder mission too
it's probably just a glitch between the spirit's video card and it's via 4-in-1 drivers
har har har
Why couldn't they wait for the B version of Via's chipset - don't they know Via always releases A as beta followed by B?

Or they forgot to format after changing the motherboard. :P
Sounds more like their version of XP wasn't activated, and now refuses to run because the time expired :D

Hope they didn't install the same copy on the other rover

By the way whats the temp on Mars? I suppose they dont need any special cooling for the system.
Edit: I dug up some facts.
Average Distance from Sun 142 million miles
Average Speed in Orbiting Sun 14.5 miles per second
Diameter 4,220 miles
Tilt of Axis 25 degrees
Length of Year 687 Earth Days
Length of Day 24 hours 37 minutes
Gravity .375 that of Earth
Temperature Average -81 degrees F
Atmosphere mostly carbon dioxide some water vapor

Anuther thing mars neads is geocentricunis satellites for cumulation and wether. Thay nead to be small and have enuff memmery for up and down links for the ground rovers.in long run this will help with problems like spirit. and thay will help when Mars goes behind the sun.

Hmm.. Since it's out there they might as well have spirit folding... I dont think Nasa is useing 100% of the CPU time.. :D

I think crunching would be more appropriate, given it's mission....

anyhoo, they shoulda just used MacOS
J/K! J/K!!!!! DONT CREMATE ME!
Hope everything gets online soon.
Don't they even check for the new detonator drivers in NASA?

This is why i think thay nead more satellites hears a reason why (http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/spirit_express_040126.html) as you can see theres information saying that theres overload with satellites you can download delete upload more efficient this will bring more success and this help you debuging problems to you will get the problem the first time not 3days later.
