I bought a Celeron 600 from Ebay. It finally arrived today, and I put it into my Abit ZM6. It doesnt boot. It doesnt do anything. Did this guy sell me a bum chip?
If a chip was fried how would I know? Is this the only possible reason for it not working? damnit..
The guy did give me all the packaging, and his receipt...nice that I would need that for the warranty...i bet he knew it was toast when he sent it to me. *******.
When you power on does it just stay as if it was in stand by mode, if this is so then this is a sign that the chip is dead, or seated incorrectly, fist check the pins, make sure they are all in tact and that nothing is covering them at all. If this is true hook it all back up and make sure that the heatsink is on right, also you normally need the reset the bios when you change a chip so do this, then make sure none of the jumpers are set to overclock in any way (if there are any) and try again, if the problem persists see if you can try the chip in another board.
You probably need to update you BIOS to run an FC-PGA Celeron II in your old ZM6. If you have the old BIOS, it's set up only to run older PPGA Celerons. Several pins have changed and you need a new BIOS in order for the motherboard to reconfigure itself.

Really? I just flashed my bios the other day with the most current .bin I could find. it was zm6_su.exe i think.. ill look into that though, thanks.
I had a thought I was about to post but my computer crashed (I have messed up my windows installation, not overclock related) I think that this board or at least some versions of it are pre fc-pga and only work with ppga chips due to the extra reset pin on the fc-pga chip, you options are a new board, or the neo adapter thing that converts ppgs s370 to fc-pga s370, but with this you either need to mod the heat sink to fit with the extra thickness of the adapter or use the bundled heat sink (barely copes with spec speed never mind overclocking), have a look over at abits website to see if your board and revision can cope with fc-pga, a bios update will not make a board that doesn't have the right sort of socket work (i.e. pre fc-pga)
If it's a cc0 stepping chip, it won't work in the ZM6/BM6... something to do with the voltage it requests and the mobo doesn't like it.
Just too bad really if thats the case.
Really you need to try this in another system to see if it works, preferably and i8** based system to be sure of compatability

Yes, it is a cCO stepping processor;) I had to pay 65 bucks for it...grin..
Now I have to buy a mobo that will work with this chip. I need a cheap, but effective solution...any suggestions?

hey man i used to have an abit zm6 also, you cant use the celeron 600 in it because it only goes up to 433. I checked. I had the same problem with a celeron 700 i thought i got burned too but i just had to get a new board.
I have used 566 Celermines on the ZM6 without a problem, so the 433 number isn't right. If it is a voltage programming problem, you can probably work around that with a little creative pin wrapping. Worst case is that you would have to cut a trace on the MB for one of the VID pins, and wrap a couple of others to Vss to make it think it is a cb0.
If you want to give it a try, I will try to help out with the info.
I would go to Abit's site and see what the latest bios does offer first, and then think about any mods.

well, i would just get a shiney new board. Anything from Abit or Asus is good in the Intel market. Not sure if IWILL or MSI have boards in that market sector also. Supermicros and Tyans are also well regarded.
