I have the same problem on 2 comps one having an asus a7n8x-deluxe mobo running a 9600xt, and the other with a gigabyte ga-7n400 pro2 using a 9600np. I cannot seem to get either to register as 8x agp, and i've tried everything from fresh install of windows xp home and fresh on windows me. i've updated both chipset drivers (nforce2). also have the 4.10 cat drivers, and I'm at a loss now, don't have a clue what to do anymore. On the pro2 i can get it to read "Radeon 9600 Series (ap) Rev 0", and on the deluxe i get agp (0x4152)
Any ideas??
both bioses are up to date

p.s. the Rev 0 is on win ME the gigabyte mobo, and the deluxe has xp home sp1, also both bioses are set for agp8x
